Border: A 2-year-old video shows a high Justice official saying "the president has directed us," including the attorney general, to speed up Project Gunrunner and the offshoot that got a border agent killed.
This tape has no 18-minute gap, and while it does not feature the president himself, the March 24, 2009, video may rival the tape that turned a "third-rate burglary" into a presidential resignation. No one died at Watergate. Agent Brian Terry lost his life in the administration's obsessive pursuit of gun control.
In addition to Agent Terry, Immigration Customs Enforcement Agent Jaime Zapata was also killed in a separate incident by a weapon allowed to "walk" into Mexico from the U.S. as part of the administration's third-rate alleged attempt to track and catch gun traffickers.
The video shows Deputy Attorney General David Ogden, who would resign nine months later after less than a year's service, telling reporters at a Department of Justice briefing of major policy initiatives to fight the Mexican drug cartels.
"The president has directed us to take action to fight these cartels," Ogden begins, "and Attorney General Holder and I are taking several new and aggressive steps as part of the administration's comprehensive plan."
At the president's direction, Ogden said, the administration's plan included DOJ's Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives "increasing its efforts by adding 37 new employees in three new offices, using $10 million in Recovery Act funds and redeploying 100 personnel to the Southwest border in the next 45 days to fortify its Project Gunrunner," of which Operation Fast and Furious would be a part.

“Gunrunner” is a legit operation funded with Stimulus money.
“Fast and Furious” is the rogue operation that let straw buyers deliver arms to Mexican drug gangs. What they did was nicknamed “gunwalking.”
Confusing Gunrunner and the gunwalking in Fast & Furious will just detract from our credibility and make us seem like we don’t know what we’re talking about.

I don’t understand this Gunrunner Issue. Did Obamas people just sell guns to gangs? Why? Were they to patrol the border or something? Was it a way to make money? I don’t get it—its so complicated I can’t see the problem. Please make it simple for an old man.

Amen, a complete economic meltdown 1 month before the election and no one questions the timing ? Even when we find out that a huge run on the money markets over only a couple of hours triggered it ? This has Soros written all over it and not a peep about it from anyone. Scandal of the century.
There are three possible explanations, none of them very sensible or satisfying:
1) The DOJ claims it was done to lead them to some "big fish" in the cartels. Perhaps so, but in that case they were perversely inept.
2) Follow the money. Maybe somebody (cartels?) wanting weaponry in Mexico was paying off one or more of the major figures in F&F. Maybe the top F&F guys thought that because they were detached from ATF itself and working directly under the US Atty in Arizona, controls would be sloppy (the US Attorney not being familiar with ATF operational SOP) and blurred and they could get away with it. Seems a very high-risk strategy, with a nasty downside.
3) Some higher-ups wanted to exaggerate the # of weapons flowing from the US to Mexico and get Mexico more ticked off to further anti 2nd Amendment initiatives in the US. Also weird. From the lack of DOJ cooperation and vigor, it would seem 1) and 3) are the most likely.
Also, they didn’t bother to track the firearms or make any arrests.
