Eric Cantor: Obama abruptly walked out of debt meeting
Politico ^ | 7/13/11 | JONATHAN ALLEN

Posted on 07/13/2011 5:34:07 PM PDT by ColdOne

“Eric, don’t call my bluff,” the president said, warning Cantor that he would take his case “to the American people.” He told Cantor that no other president — not Ronald Reagan, the president said — would put up with the treatment he was getting from the House majority leader.

The latest and sharpest in a series of harsh exchanges between the two leaders heightened concern that markets could crash at any time amid fear of a reduction in the rating on once-ironclad U.S. debt.

Cantor accused the president and congressional Democrats of progressively low-balling, over the last several days, the savings that could be achieved from proposals discussed by Vice President Joe

“Cantor’s account of tonight’s meeting is completely overblown,” the aide said, adding that Cantor exhibited “juvenile behavior” by repeatedly interrupting Obama. The aide said House Speaker John Boehner, the top Republican in Congress, must rein in Cantor and “let the grown-ups get to work.”

ERIC!!!.... CALL HIS BLUFF!!!... CALL HIS BLUFF!!!

At least this country HAS a debt ceiling!

If we increase it, we might as well ELIMINATE IT...

which is precisely the type of action that would rightly warrant a downgrading of our national debt.

Update 2: House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD) said no progress was made on the talks today.

Update 3: Reuters is reporting that Obama would not back down on a comprehensive deal to raise debt ceiling, even if it jeopardizes his reelection chances.

“Would Ronald Reagan be sitting here,” he reportedly asked. “I’ve reached my limit. This may bring my presidency down, but I will not yield on this.’’

If President Obama does not want to be called “Barry” then he should not be calling the House Majority Leader “Eric”. Titles like “Mr. President” or “Congressman” or “Majority Leader”... are not in the Constitution or prescribed by law; they are social conventions that are two-way streets.

Update 4: Democratic aides continue to push back against Cantor’s account, telling NBC’s Luke Russert that Cantor was rude at the end of the meeting, and Obama ended it.

“Dem Aide, no walk out: Cantor rudely interrupted POTUS 3 times to advocate for short-term debt ceiling increases while BO was wrapping mtg,” Russert tweeted.

All part of the show. Between the debt ceiling debate and MediScare, this is the Obama 2012 election centerpieces. He knows Gingrich got his clock cleaned in the court of public opinion in 95’, and he expects to do it again to Boehner and the GOP House.

Unfortunately the American people are absolutely wedded to the social welfare state, they will support not raising the debt limit right up until actual programs start losing funding and then my guess is the public will howl in outrage and demand their freebies back - at which point eventually the GOP will may cave.

This is probably a no win situation for the Republicans, but the right thing to do is hold fast and make sure the public understands that the Republicans are for major cuts in spending and smaller government. We may lose big in the short run, but we’ve got to get back to the public viewing the Republican party as the fiscally responsible, low tax party.

Notice Obama`s concern is not about the end of the world [which he claims we`re on the verge of] but how HE is being treated—you wouldn`t treat Ronald Reagan this way! If I were in that room I`d say, `I knew Ronald Reagan. Ronald Reagan was a president of mine. Barry, you`re no Ronald Reagan.` : ] Unlike RWR this president is always about ME!ME!ME!

This clown is so over his head by mentioning other Presidents, and what they would do in his current situation. I'd laugh in his face if he mentioned Reagan in any serious conversation, or any other former President, for that matter. It's YOUR JOB NOW, BARRY. This fool is more concerned with his place in history than actually serving his constituents. The next two weeks will bring the end of Obama’s presidency, for all practical purposes.

Cantor rudely interrupted POTUS 3 times to advocate for short-term debt ceiling increases while BO was wrapping mtg,” Russert tweeted

The Dems think the president should be a dictator like Mussolini, Hitler, Castro or Stalin. Actually engaging him in two-way discussion in a negotiating session is deemed offensive. The president makes pronouncements and discourses, and everyone else should satisfy themselves with appreciating the wisdom of the dear leader.

Under our constitution, the president is just a citizen (supposedly) serving a temporary term in a government position.

I understand the intent of the remark but does “don’t call my bluff” make any sense when you think about it? If it’s a bluff, it means Obama likely has the worse hand and is trying to move his opponent off a better one. If he’s bluffing with the better hand (as they say), then it really isn’t a bluff. Leave it to Obama to utter something like that and have it be treated by Politico as some sort of profound statement.

“The latest and sharpest in a series of harsh exchanges between the two leaders heightened concern that markets could crash at any time amid fear of a reduction in the rating on once-ironclad U.S. debt.”

Nonsense of the highest order.

What would make investors more nervous—(i) that the congress critters don’t come to an agreement on the debt ceiling, though there will still be plenty of money to service debt payments, or (ii) that the congress critters fail to address the sea of debt we are drowning in that will eventually take everything down?

If the debt payments are made, and there is money to spare to do that whether the debt ceiling is raised or not, there will be no reduction in credit rating. If we don’t deal with our spending crisis, eventually no one will be willing to give us credit.

The article above implies that Obama “owned” Cantor and Cantor just sat there in stunned silence. But Russert’s tweets imply that Obama got heated because Cantor keep interrupting him. Those two takes don’t seem to match up.

Cantor seems to have located Obama’s button and pushed it-it was only a matter of time before someone did. Sounds like Obama lost it and now they’re denying it.

Keep it up, Cantor. Maybe Obama will get so ticked off he’ll just butt out of the process and let Congress handle it.

I'm not so sure about that.

I think the opposite is true...he knows that raising taxes sinks the economy. But, like FDR, he wants to stretch out the pain as long as possible so he can keep growing Gov't bureaucracy.

BO is an embarrassment to cry babies everywhere. It is up to every sensible senior citizen to contact their member of Congress and say that they refuse to be threatened by this spoiled brat of a president. He is such a liar, knowing that there is absolutely NO WAY anyone could stop the SS checks from going out in two weeks.

And with Helicopter Ben hinting today that the Fed will dump still more shrinking dollars into the market with a QE 3, there is plenty of cash to pay the SEVENTY MILLION Americans who get checks from taxpayers every month. Of course, bread may some day cost $100 a loaf.

From the article:
Obama told Cantor that he would either have to agree to tax increases or give up on his demand that the debt hike be matched dollar-to-dollar to the cuts — that is, $2.5 trillion in deficit-reduction over 10 years in exchange for a $2.5 trillion hike in the debt ceiling.
1000% smoke and mirrors. Whatta buncha BS. We all know that "$2,500,000,000,000 in deficit-reduction over 10 years" won't happen. Truth be told we'd be damn lucky to see 20% of that actually happen. And even then a bunch of it would be BS.

We need logical, common sense, real life cuts over the next three years. These cuts need to be down in writing. These cuts need to be something the American public can easily track. These cuts need to have realistic, achievable milestones.

In short, these cuts need to be real and the truth.

IMHO, all these assholes, on both sides need to forget the Skittles and Unicorns and get deadly serious about our country's future.
