Reid: No Social Security checks without debt deal
AP – 10 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — Echoing President Barack Obama's warning, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says Social Security payments would stop if there is no deal to raise the government's borrowing limit by Aug. 2.

Speaking on the Senate floor, the Nevada Democrat said flatly that payments for veterans benefits and the military, as well as Social Security, would cease if the government defaults on its obligations. His statement goes beyond Obama, who said earlier this week that he could not guarantee Social Security checks will be issued on Aug. 3.

Later, a Reid spokesman said the senator meant to say the payments "could" stop, which would be consistent with the president's comments.

Republicans have called such statements scare tactics.

I’m just joking, mostly.

Again, SS payments aren’t in jeopardy, and if the GOP had the comms machine that the libs did, they could impale these idiots on that threat and corner them into a deal.

Boehner should have come out immediately, explained the law to Americans that surely get it, and then say:

“So you see, if the President and Mr. Reid want to threaten your livelihood and break their promises to you, it’s because they are CHOOSING to do it, and not because they HAVE to do it.

I’d remind the President not to take a hostage he isn’t willing to shoot. If the President is suggesting taking my mother, or your grandmother’s SS check hostage when he doesn’t have to, then I’m not sure what ‘good faith’ looks like from here. The President has our bill, which is now in the Senate, that’s what we can pass.”

It’s ironic that Obama accuses the GOP of being “hostage takers” while making threats about entitlements. Meanwhile Obama minions Bernanke and Geithner make more threats about the economy.

” We heard all about Hayworth’s associations (Abramoff) from the media,...”

They were half-truths, and bare-faced lies.

Hayworth was deeply investigated, and UTTERLY exonerated.

It is all a matter of public record.

” REFERENCE-—BY MICHELLE MALKIN Fannie Mae serves as an industrial-sized patronage factory — sharing profits with political allies, spreading taxpayer funds to voting blocs——like ethnic groups-——and doling out jobs to left-wing academics, Washington has-beens and back-scratching buddies. Obama insider Fannie Mae exec Jim Johnson got sweetheart loans from shady subprime Countrywide. Pols raked in six-figure salaries as F/F engaged in Enron-style accounting, plunged into debt and helped usher in the subprime housing meltdown through cockamamie lending practices. “

That's a pretty big change in meaning. CYA!

I wouldnt call it ironic, I would call it 'waging political war to destroy clueless Republicans'. If Republicans were organized and had a clue they would get the voter to realize that Obama is threatening to cut off SS payments if Obama veto's a debt extension passed by congress.

But I am getting the impression, as I posted already today, that congressional Republicans are incapable of working as a team to crush Obama on this issue(an issue they had the complete political advantage on last year) , and that it is only going to get worse.

I remember last year posting :”Be careful what you wish for”

I double dog dare these miserable traitors to do this. They won’t do it, but I truly believe if they actually stopped these checks, there would be an all out civil war.

>>>>Old folks marching on DC with their walkers, or trailing their oxygen tanks, tubes sticking out of both nostrils.

A crush of old people in double knit polyester banging on the doors of the capitol with their canes.

Thousands of Lincolns, old Cadillacs, and Chryslers clogging DC, with thousands of other parked cars sideswiped and dinged.

Interstates and intersections clogged by cars driven by drivers that seemingly have two hands on the wheel, but no head.<<<<

FYI, “old folks” are much more active and fit than you seem to be able to imagine. Many of us own weapons, and know how to use them. *Many* of us are on the internet, social media like Facebook, and know how to text, grammatically. Some of us served in the military and still remember our training. And we didn’t keep those junkers, we donated them to the SA and bought something sporty to enjoy in our old age. If you think we’ll come tottering to DC to express our feelings, think again. ;-D

;-D

Maybe “hypocritical” is a better word thsn “ironic.”

And, yes, there is a real danger that the GOP will either:

1) Get blamed for “hurting seniors/the economy”

2) Get swindled by raising the debt limit for phony “cuts”

or maybe both.

RE :”Maybe “hypocritical” is a better word thsn “ironic.”

It doesnt matter, what matters is who wins, Liberals or conservatives. Not matter who loses they will make similar sounding complaints and will look like sore losers. There was years of whining over 1995, but that fight was not played well by Newt. And I have said many times, Boehner and McConnnell were the wrong leaders to stay on in 2009. This might get rid of Boehner

Losing could be short term or longer term or both. And time will tell who the winners/losers are. Not optimistic.

It will be an interesting example of political reality if raising the debt ceiling turns from VERY UNPOPULAR to its very unpopular to not raise it, swapped in a short period of time.

If they stop paying the military, I would expect a military coup within hours.

Would also expect that if they started starving grandmas on social security. They would be acting as a foreign enemy attacking US citizens. Especially considering that they had the money available and choose to starve US citizens instead.
