One-in-five Americans (20%) say they or someone they know has bought large quantities of traditional light bulbs to use when those bulbs disappear off store shelves next year under new federal light bulb regulations.
A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 70% of Adults arent doing that themselves or dont know anyone who is, but another 10% are not sure.
The new government regulations provide for the manufacture of similar-looking bulbs that will last longer and be more energy-efficient but also more expensive. Critics view the regulations as unnecessary government intrusion in the free market and see them as effectively banning the kind of light bulb Americans have used for decades.
Just 20% of adults think the sale of traditional light bulbs should be banned. Sixty-seven percent (67%) oppose such a ban. Thirteen percent (13%) are undecided.
However, 57% think it is at least somewhat likely that the new light bulbs, while they will cost more up front, will save money in the long run, as the federal Energy Department claims. Thirty-six percent (36%) think long-term savings are unlikely. These findings include 29% who think the savings are Very Likely and just nine percent (9%) who say they are Not At All Likely.
Two years ago, only 18% of adults thought it was the governments job to tell Americans what kind of light bulb they should use. Seventy-two percent (72%) say its none of the governments business.

My wife needed something that was cheaper there than online and it wasn’t available otherwise... that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it.
I have already bought a bunch of incandescents, stocked up for some time. I tried those cfl’s and in any location that you turn on and off the light frequently, they don’t last. Worse, when they are burning out, they get insanely hot at the base and often smoke giving off a nasty bakelight smell that I am sure is not enviro-wacko friendly. And don’t even get me started on the mercury in them.
I don’t know why envirowackos are so concerned with my light bulbs, everyone knows that electricity is generated by granola crunching unicorns, whose flapping wings gently turn windmill blades; there is plenty of electricity.
Save me from the people who would save me from myself.
That’s a good one..will have to borrow it
For the next election, I see a Pubbie slogan
"The Dems, the idiots who want to micromanage your life, from those curly light bulbs, to credit card fees, tiny little electric cars, right up to your unavaible healthcare and the National Debt."

Obviously, I see it a lot!
Not buying it.
I have sources everywhere.
So why did you, clad in your recyclable seaweed Earth sandals, and low Earth-impact, hemp “Gaia First!” (complete with power fist graphic), T shirt, purchase pesticide-free, grey Tofu slabs and organically raised, free-range earthworms for your Sunday BBQ?
Shut up! You’ll blow my cover.
They need to stop that, lest they upset a protected species of earth worms.
SOMEONE PLEASE CONFIRM! . . . I have heard that the legislation merely requires a more efficient bulb, and thus, we are seeing the appearance for sale of (1) new 95-watt bulbs, and (2) new 75-watt bulbs that put out the light equivalent of current 100-watt bulbs. Therefore, since we can buy these, the new horrid, fluorescent curly bulbs are not necessary. TRUE? FALSE?
Philips is selling these at amazon.
The other 33% are in the dark on the subject.
And while I am thinking about it, how about licenses for kids’ lemonade stands.
IMHO, LED “light bulbs” will be/are the solution.
LEDs are still a little pricey, but getting cheaper. And the manufacturers are working like crazy to make one that gives off the same color temperature was incandescent bulbs.
LEDs have a life span of 100,000 hours. That’s 11 years!
I haven’t had the best of luck with the longevity of the LED’s. I had two of them in the bathroom, and neither lasted longer than 6 months. It is possible that the humidity killed them, however, that significantly limits their use and usefulness if so.
Perhaps they will get better in time.
GOP light bulb amendment likely to pass Friday after earlier defeat:
Interesting article and comments, particularly one further down listing the scientific reasons why CFL’s are not as safe, efficient or economical as incandescent bulbs. (Some great points for the next time you argue with a Lib/Greenie :-)
This was so good I wanted everyone to have it (sorry for the repeat, Upchuck) -
GOP light bulb amendment likely to pass Friday after earlier defeat:
Interesting article and comments, particularly the letter by Joe Doakes to his congressman & BHO and the last one on the page by Karl, listing the scientific reasons why CFLs are not as safe, efficient or economical as incandescent bulbs. (Some great points for the next time you argue with a Lib/Greenie :-)
“The other 33% are in the dark on the subject.” - I have always thought it would take a ‘dim bulb’ to think the sky was falling.
