Republicans increasing complaints that the commission appointed to oversee the redrawing of borders for state legislative and congressional seats has gone partisan are absolutely not true, according to Gil Ontai, a San Diego architect who is on the panel. In an interview with a U-T editorial writer, he cited a lack of appreciation of the complexity of this process.
We have no reason to question Ontais honesty or sincerity. Nevertheless, some of the criticism aimed at the commission seems valid.
Plans to release a second draft of proposed borders this week were scrapped.
Instead, interested parties can go online to look at visualizations of electoral maps, which are subject to frequent revisions.
This fluidity unnerves some observers, who wonder if they will wake up on the panels July 28 deadline to see final versions of districts that have undergone major revisions without explanation. Commission members say time constraints basically have given them no choice but to operate in this fashion.
That may be so, but given the importance of the panels work to democracy in California, we understand why people would wonder if this is the best the state can do.
In any event, we continue to hope the final maps are fair and thoughtful. If the result is an increase in the number of competitive districts in the state, all the better.
I have never seen pictures of panel members. I will go out on a limb and guess it is “Diverse!”

is there still a republican party in california?
with the likes of the dyke dumanis running as a “republican”
i wonder.
remember how dumanis a new-comer called paul plingst an
“anti-semite” (when his family is part jewish) and
she won.
with the help of msm.
First Paul Pfingst was incompetent.
Second, Dumanis has always run and been known as a Republican. She was no "new comer" since she had been a Deputy DA in San Diego since 1978, later elected locally as a judge.
Third, the "anti-semite" claim was related to a particular trial case.
Lastly since there are four leading candidates, your "dyke dumanis," (let me guess your pithy lingo) "queer" Carl DeMaio (R), registered socialist congressman Bob Filner (D) you must be for weaselly establishment RINO Nathan Fletcher in the 2012 mayor's race.
All of the district lines in my area look crazy.
For one category, I found 3 options - they all stunk.
Any time a "public" servant tells us we got to wait until they adopt it to see what's in it, I cringe.
Megalomania seems to be a poplar disease among delusional, controlling twits.
HUH? On what planet?
you’re rude.
and misinformed.
bill kolender the sheriff in 2002 wrote a letter to the sdut
supporting pfingst, denying the sdut editorial that called him and “anti-semite.
pfingst was not incompetent. and still has a law practice, and is respected.
dumanis is not a republican in the sense of the word we use on this forum.
you belong over at du.
She’s a RINO (DIABLO maybe) but she was never a democrat (despite being falsely presented as one) AFAIK. Just another lifelong RINO.
thank you.
fyi:
today’s l.a. times:
“...attorney paul pfingst, former two-term district attorney, now one of the region’s top criminal defense attorneys...”
