Rick Santorum picks a fight with Michele Bachmann
By ALEXANDER BURNS | 7/18/11 6:25 PM EDT

The former Pennsylvania senator is trying to start something, Dan Hirschhorn reports:

Rick Santorum isn't impressed with Michele Bachmann's debt ceiling theatrics, telling POLITICO that the tea party firebrand is "playing politics instead of providing real leadership in the debt limit debate."

"We have the President of the United States scaring seniors by saying they might not receive their Social Security checks. We have Minority Leader Mitch McConnell wanting to cede authority to the President, and we have Michele Bachmann playing politics instead of providing real leadership in the debt limit debate," Santorum said in a statement. "I think America has seen enough grandstanding and political posturing in Washington. Since 1990, the debt limit has been raised a total of $10.1 trillion, but nearly half of that increase has occurred since September 2007. This is a serious issue and the American people deserve it to be handled that way."

It's the first time Santorum has gone directly at Bachmann, who's already taking away from the base of Iowa social conservatives that Santorum had hoped to capture when Mike Huckabee exited the race.

The only substantive difference between Santorum and Bachmann on the debt limit issue is that Bachmann wants a complete repeal of "Obamacare" before an increase, while Santorum hasn't gone that far. He's been consistent in saying that dollar-for-dollar spending cuts and a balanced budget amendment, as laid out in the Cut, Cap, Balance" pledge would be enough. Bachmann signed the pledge at a news conference today, but wrote in her own additional line about a full health care repeal.

So unless you support some deal you're playing politics? So does that mean the millions of Americans who do not want to see the debt ceiling increased under any circumstances are also playing politics? My fear is there will be strings attached to the cut, cap and balance vote. That Boehner will expect support for some compromise in return for allowing a vote on cut, cap and balance. I agree with Mark Levin. We need to hold the GOP accountable for EVERY vote.

Santorum talks to Politico? WTF? Why would a conservative EVER respond to a question from Politico, a left wing rag that exists only to smear conservatives. Have Palin, Bachmann, Cain or Perry ever responded to a question from Politico?

Bachmann signs ‘Cut, Cap, and Balance’ pledge, adds promise to defund Obamacare

The same Monday President Obama promised he will veto a balanced budget amendment, presidential candidate Michele Bachmann signed the “Cut, Cap, and Balance” pledge during a campaign stop in Columbia, S.C.

“The principles found in this Pledge are a historic step in the right direction toward the fundamental restructuring we need in the way Washington spends taxpayer dollars,” Bachmann said.

Along with her support for the initiative Bachmann added her own personal line to the pledge: the repeal and defunding of Obamacare.

“In signing the Pledge, I am adding a line; I also pledge that along with cutting spending, putting in place enforceable spending caps, and passing a balanced budget amendment, we must repeal and defund Obamacare,” Bachmann said.

“Obamacare is the largest spending and entitlement program in our nation’s history,” she added. “Without its repeal, we cannot have real economic reform.”

Bachmann is the ninth Republican presidential candidate to sign the pledge.

Little Ricky Santorum truly believes he is smarter than all the other kids. I've seen that behavior up close.

But here's the thing: He's one of the most insecure individuals ever to grace the capital steps.

Off with you now, Little Ricky.

I'm beginning to lose a lot of respect for Santorum. Everything Bachmann has said is appropriate considering what Obambi has done to our nation. But to grant interviews to a libtard rag is very bad judgement.

I thought he was going to be a breath of fresh air but he was just another tool for the GOP RINO machine here in PA,
one who was pro-life but otherwise very much the insider.

I remember him on Fox News last year praising the idea of a Lisa Murkowski win over Tea Party GOP candidate Joe Miller.

Santorum flew out to Alaska in 2004 to twist arms for Lisa in the GOP Primary.

I simply disagree with a balanced budget amendment. It will result in a California mentality of.. oops we are out of money so we must increase taxes, by law. It does not work.

He’s just feeding the media narrative that Bachmann tilts at windmills. I even heard Bill O’Reilly bitch about Bachmann wanting defunding of Obamacare added to the cut, cap and balance pledge because he said it would never happen. Well we know cut, cap and balance is DOA in the senate and even if it did pass Obama would veto it. So should we abandon that too?

Santorum’s trying to break out of the 1-2% bracket.

I predict he’ll only go down further.

I think the BBA being pushed includes spending caps and a 2/3 majority to raise taxes.

We all know that Obamacare must go. At present we only control,at best,one-third of the debate/budget process.

In the last week Zero has used his mainstream media pals to spin, twist, lie, distort, plus you name it to bump up his standing. Obamacare was passed because the left had all three branches of Gov. The more plans that Reps put out there-the more confused the average Joe gets.

It is Obama’s job to put the damn budget plan out. That is what should be demanded now and it must be in writing. 800 plus days and no budget.

I'm with Michele. It's inexcusable that after 8 months the house still hasn't passed a repeal of O-care. I don't care if it would die in the Senate, or Obama would veto it. Attach it to every spending bill except for Defense and let them kill it. As for McConnell, that turncoat rat bastard needs to be replaced as minority leader now. He is embodies everything wrong with the RINO class. I predeicted in November he would sell us out, and I am unfortunately right again.

There is no such law in CA. The RATS can pass whatever budget and spending bills they want by a simple majority, but they still need a 2/3 vote (two pubs) in both houses and the governors signature, or voter approval to raise taxes. So their spening bills don't mean jack if they run out of money to pay for them.

I have repeatedly posted that Santorum is a RINO who voted for Amtrak Pork, subsidizing ethanol (clearly to prevent Global Warming), and flip-flopped on abortion in 1990. His hid his true position on abortion for political purposes. He wants to disallow it only if it is proven that the baby is radiating brain waves. He also supported Arlen Specter.
