Obama backs bill to repeal Defense of Marriage Act

The Obama administration announced Tuesday that it will support a congressional effort to repeal a federal law that defines marriage as a legal union between a man and woman.

White House spokesman Jay Carney denounced the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), saying the administration will back a bill introduced this year by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) to remove the law from the books.

Feinstein’s bill, called the Respect for Marriage Act, would “uphold the principle that the federal government should not deny gay and lesbian couples” the same rights as others, according to Carney.

The Senate is scheduled to hold an initial hearing on Feinstein’s proposal on Wednesday.

“The policy was wrong then and it is wrong today, and I believe it should be repealed,” Feinstein said Tuesday morning during remarks at the National Press Club.

Obama’s decision came five months after his administration instructed U.S. Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. to stop defending DOMA and represents a continuing evolution in Obama’s views on same-sex marriage. In February, Holder said parts of DOMA were unconstitutional because of “classifications based on sexual orientation.”

The issue has become politically dicey for Obama as he and his Republican rivals ramp up for the 2012 campaign season. The president was booed last month during an appearance in New York, when he told a gay audience that “traditionally marriage has been decided by the states.” Forty-one states currently ban same-sex marriage.

Opponents of same-sex marriage have decried the Justice Department’s refusal to defend the law as an unjustified political move.

Kalifornicate’s Feinstein, it figures. If not from her, the destruction of marriage act would've come from Boxer or Pelosi.

President Cloward-Piven's only goal in anything he does is to overwhelm the system.

I sure hope we get a chance to overwhelm him someday.

...and represents a continuing evolution in Obama’s views on same-sex marriage

Where does the Washington Post find these Daily Collegian copy boys like David Nakamura?

Ubanga's views on sodomy have never changed - - he's all for it. In fact, if there was ever a dude who dabbled in the "down low", it's Ubanga. That scumbag only said what he said during the campaign because he thought that's what would help his election chances. Only now is he beginning to be honest. But his views have never changed.

But I thought 0bama believed marriage was between a man and a woman?

Who knows? He flip-flops on this one continually.

What I do know is that his base is livid over his recent support for cutting Medicare and SS so expect to see more homosexual activism from the WH to try to mollify the 'bats.

“...how this will play in black churches...”

Obama could chainsaw his daughters to death on live television and his Black support will not drop much below 95 percent.

It always helps when someone states the truth in a way that makes it funny.

1) that the far-left liberals are trying to do something that their base can be happy about;

Correct. They are VERY unhappy right now with the Messiah as he seems to be completely about to shaft them on entitlements.

Yep, this is pure politics. This is just a bit of red meat to throw to the base to get them fired up even though even the most delusional lefty knows it will get nowhere.

He knows the destruction of traditional marriage furthers the goals of the left,
but he also knows that he can’t gain or retain power

if he alienates most of the people.

Obama is like Mohammed. He makes up his own religion and his followers follow him to the hilt.If the blackk Church’s mess with the Messiah they will lose their parisioners.

Obama is “The One”.

If he decides that we must all bend over and take it from another man, that is the way it will be.

Long live He who rules./s/

He's hoping to gain support of a large swathe of the middle with the upcoming debt deal.

If he goes with the debt deal he's going to lose a large chunk on the left unless he gets more radical with the gay stuff.

I don't think his gambit will work. IMO He will alienate everyone as you said.

He doesn’t have to worry all that much with the media running interference for him. To the left if it isn’t reported in the NYT or on their govt friendly TV stations then it didn’t happen/isn’t true/or there’s a good reason.

Stalin or someone said that when things get bad enough the people will take anything you give them. I think that’s where zero is trying to take us - to make us beggers at the feet of our bureaucracy.

It’s all about 2012. Feinstein is up for reelection. This helps Obama with his base.

Feinstein’s bill, called the Respect for Marriage Act...

Did you know that Democrats actually giggle when they come up with titles like this?

No really, they actually do - out loud.

“Black vote; Gay vote; Abortion vote; Muslim vote; GM vote; GE vote”

Don’t forget the non-G-d vote. Pew polls show that about 15% of Americans now consider themselves non-believers, secularists, humanists, agnostics, or even atheists. This amounts to about 30 million of voting age, and 15% is more than the margin of victory.
