States save by moving vets from Medicaid's rolls to VA's
Stateline ^ | JULY 18, 2011 | Pamela M. Prah

A growing number of states are shifting health care costs to the federal government by finding military veterans who receive Medicaid and signing them up for medical benefits through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

With as many serious problems that the VA is experiencing right now, this does not bode well for the veterans being 'encouraged' to switch from private health care providers to bureaucratic health care providers.

It's just a matter of time before this becomes a scandal. It's the way of the VA.

I don’t care if it is by state directives, federal mandates or a specific amount out of my own pocket.

We OWE our soldiers (and all the variant names across the services, please don’t be insulted). There should be a specific payment (OK, A tax, but tell us that is what is for!) that Americans make that goes straight to our military veterans — all gave some, some gave all, we should give accordingly!

If said tax were well-managed like many of the top charities (and this ISN’T charity!) then there would never be a vet with a sign on the side of the road (and that is why it is so sad the Stolen Honor act was shot down — people think they are being scammed).

I give to MilVet charities — that is all I can do.

It is sad we use more money for illegal aliens than those who chose to serve our country.

waht is sad is that the congress and the president - going back to WWII - can’t seem to get the priorities straight...they make new laws for cars, the air etc etc. but ignore the vet. Riots happened at the turn of the 20th centuary over care of vets - not much has changed in 110 years

We can and should make that a plank in our (hopefully) successful 2012 recovery of the US Government from the Communists and America-haters who are occupying our political halls of power.

Those states will save even more if they find out which countries the illegal aliens come from and move the billing address from the American taxpayer to the home country government...

Add to this the "Gang of Six" plan, which will kick us military retirees of of TRICARE Prime... a plan that we pay for.

It is starting to look like veterans and retirees are the ones who will sacrifice, so that welfare recipients and illegal aliens won't have to see THEIR "entitlements" cut.

Many times while performing a military funeral ceremony, I knelt before a widow or other next of kin as I passed them the folded flag and began: "On behalf of a grateful nation...".

I didn't know I was lying. Honest.

Out of Tricare Prime or Tricare for Life? Found out there is a difference because apparently one doc’s office is filing my husband’s claims with Prime and not Life...wrong office basically, and they’re not cross referenced with each other or Medicare. No wonder there’s so much waste...so inefficient.

The report I saw said TRICARE Prime. It claimed that Coburn said that it was the program with the “lowest out of pocket” cost to the retiree... so naturally THAT is the one they want to get rid of. (Of course, they made NO mention of the fact that we pay premiums for it, it is NOT free.)

I know last year, we forked out quite a bit for my daughter’s appointments, etc (not everything was completely covered, as some think...and don’t get me wrong, I know civilian companies don’t cover everything, so I’m not whining) because she had severe scoliosis. She just had major surgery for it as it was going to end up crippling her if we didn’t. And Tricare for retirees does not cover at all behavioral therapy for autistic children, which my son needs. It would help us if it was covered, even just partially.

Like I said in post #7, the military and veterans (and their families) are going to get shafted in the Debt Ceiling deal, no matter what.

Welfare recipients and illegal aliens will make out just fine... every politician CARES about THEM.

That’s because they’re worried about their voting base in #1 and in #2, they hope to ultimately make them legal to have more people paying into social security because of social security being in the tank. Veterans are such a small percentage of society, it’s ok to sacrifice them...and it disgusts me. It reminds me of Coolidge’s line that “A nation which forgets it’s defenders will itself be forgotten”.

I agree with you, PalmettoMason. TRICARE, or any other veterans or military service members benefits MUST NOT be cut by the government that hundreds of thousands have given their lives to defend!

I’m going to fight the ObamaNation with my vote, and to not back down in any discussion about Obama’s anti-American hate.

Our resistance to his socialist and liberal progressive agenda will attract more.

We just need to keep disciplined and fight this menace on the political and public relations battleground.

We will win.

Peace.

I just read Coburn's plan again. It is under "Breaking News". (Details of Sen. Tom Coburn's $9 trillion plan to balance the budget)

He wants to restrict TRICARE Prime to active duty personnel and their dependents, and raise the cost of private health insurance for retirees.

Unless one of his fellow GOP Senators punches him in his damned mouth and lays him out right on the floor of the Senate Chamber, I think I'm about done with Republicans.

Coburn has a history of screwing the military when it comes to money:

On May 24, 2007, the US Senate voted 80–14 to fund the war in Iraq. Coburn voted nay.[20] On October 1, 2007, the Senate voted 92–3 to fund the war in Iraq. Coburn voted nay. (Wikipedia)
