U.S. Nearly Assassinated Top Al Qaeda Leader Awlaki, Sources Say
Fox News ^ | July 19, 2011 | Jennifer Griffin

Posted on 07/19/2011 7:12:38 PM PDT by Pan_Yan

The U.S. nearly took out Anwar Al-Awlaki, a top Al Qaeda target in Yemen, in an assassination attempt days after the killing of Usama bin Laden, senior U.S. defense and intelligence sources tell Fox News.

On May 5, Marine Harrier jets were sent on a mission to follow Awlaki using intelligence provided by Yemenis hoping to keep President Ali Abdullah Saleh in power.

The aircraft were able to locate Awlaki traveling in a truck. But fuel storage and technical problems with the jets’ Griffin missiles – a new and improved version of a Hellfire missile -- caused the operation to fail and allowed him to escape.

And we need to know this why??

Because almost no one can keep their traps shut anymore, so our government has to release secrets before someone else does.

Somebody send Fleabaghead a case of DEPENDS because I’m sure he really shit his pants when the first missile hit.

Don’t worry, Ali asskisser, we’re gonna get you. As the newsman in the original movie of “The Thing”, said in his broadcast, “Look to the skies.”

Yep, ragpicker, it’s death from above coming at you at about 400-500 mph. Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue.

It’s not a near-miss, it’s a hit.

It’s not an “almost assassinated”, it’s... didn’t.

Why not wait until he comes back to Fairfax, VA in August for summer vacation? Andrews AFB or Quantico would be a short sortie.

"Nearly" is in the ball park of all those 'woulda', 'coulda', 'might have', 'maybe', 'if', 'if only', etc. Don't count for squat and to even report a "nearly" is not only beyond ludicrous, it is asinine, idiotic, and most of all, irrelevant. =.=

I'm like you: in fact, a pet peeve of mine is when a football announcer says, "That pass was ALMOST INTERCEPTED!" I always say, "It's equally valid to say: 'The cornerback ALMOST MESSED UP THAT PLAY EVEN WORSE THAN HE DID!'"

As a matter of fact, that "almost intercepted", "almost assassinated" idea is both a real victory and a moral victory for the other side -- and thus it's a negative to even mention it as such.

Nah, the Griffin is a super new and tiny missile —maybe just 40 pounds. You can carry two or more for every hellfire.

Tell that to Khaled Meshaal

The Israelis have screwed up plenty of times.

The Meshaal operation was one of the biggest screw ups in history, and is largely responsible for the existence and strength of Hamas in its current form.

They’ve missed guys a bunch of times.

Raytheon's Griffin, a tube-launched, laser-guided
mini-missile reportedly carried by Predators.

Raytheon's Griffin missile makes quiet gains with US military

08/09/10
The US Air Force plans to launch production of a new Raytheon missile to equip its weaponised unmanned air vehicles with a precision-guided projectile featuring a smaller but still potent blast radius.

Although less than one-third the size of Lockheed Martin's AGM-114 Hellfire, the Griffin is among of a new class of miniature, precision-guided weapons rising in demand during an era when aerial strikes on insurgents carries the risk of killing innocent civilians.

There's your problem. Our enemies employ tactics to kill as many as they can, hopefully innocent bystanders. We however employ the touchy feely kinder gentler approach. God forbid if we kill his driver, we just want to take out the one guy sitting in the rear passenger side seat.

USMC Harriers are not always armed with guns.

But when they are armed with a gun, Harriers have a General Electric GAU-12/U 25mm gun pod on the port side.
There is a fairing on the starboard side that holds 300 rounds of ammo.

Thank you for the info. In the movie "True Lies" they had a harrier shoot up a bridge, so I just assumed they had guns (since everything in movies is true and correct).

How long does it take the GAU-12 to burn up 300 rounds? 3 seconds?

Thank you for the info.

Oh, my pleasure. Love looking up hardware. Just looked that gun up again. I enjoy reading the specs. I post the info for people that are also interested.

I've seen True Lies a couple of times. I can't remember the Harrier scene. Wish I had total recall.

(Its rate of fire is normally 3,600 rounds per minute, with a maximum of 4,200 rounds per minute.)
