Former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld helped organize Rick Perry's foreign policy and national security briefing in Austin last Wednesday, Rumsfeld's staff confirmed today.
Perry's aides have been tight-lipped about the gathering, which National Review reported included former Rumsfeld aides Doug Feith, Daniel Fata, and William Luti, as well as the magazine's Andrew McCarthy and others.
He (Rumsfeld) is watching the current field with interest and is particularly interested in the candidates' positions on foreign and national security policy and their prospects in winning in November 2012.

This would be Mister No More Troops, correct?
That’s the list of peope I want to see prepping the next president. Cool

The NeoCons are making their move on Perry.
I say screw the foreign policy. Shut off the foreign aid. We have enough problems here in the USA to keep us occupied for a long long time. All the foreign policy experts so far have been able to muck up the world affairs to the point of being on the brink of Armageddon. We know who our friends are. Screw the rest. JMHO
After seeing this same pitch twice, I’d have to be an idiot to swing at it again.
Donald Rumsfeld is this generation's Robert McNamara. Both were arrogant know-it-alls who wasted thousands of lives.
From the Washington Post Sept 9, 2006 (yeah, I know it's leftist paper):
"Long before the United States invaded Iraq in 2003, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld forbade military strategists to develop plans for securing a postwar Iraq, the retiring commander of the Army Transportation Corps said.
Brig. Gen. Mark E. Scheid told the Newport News Daily Press in an interview published yesterday that Rumsfeld had said "he would fire the next person" who talked about the need for a postwar plan.
Probably all arranged by Rove.
Rumsfeld is one of my most favorite....way to go Perry...excellent choice.
Hard curve or slider. They are hard to lay off of.
Karl Rove says he and consultant David Weeks persuaded Rick Perry to switch parties and run for state agriculture commissioner
Texas Gov. Rick Perry draws mention in GOP consultant Karl Roves autobiography with attention
focused on Perrys win for lieutenant governor in 1998 and Rove’s role in his pivotal earlier
switch from the Democratic to Republican party while he was a third-term member of the Texas House.
Rove writes: Rick Perry had planned to retire from the legislature until his best friend,
David Weeks, and I talked him into switching parties and running for the GOP nomination for
agriculture commissioner. His book, “Courage and Consequence, My Life as a Conservative
in the Fight,” was published March 9.
Your right, the NeoCons want a establishment tolerated candidate, one they believe the can work with. I like Perry, but I like him in Texas.
Rummy always struck me as the independent thinker in the Bush camp. I’m not bothered by him helping Perry. Any governor is going to need to beef up their foreign policy/national defense cred and Rummy is an excellent resource to do that with. Would you rather it was Henry Kissinger?
I am a big Rumsfeld fan.
Perry is strong on low taxes, few regulations and job creation, with a RECORD, not just words.
