Former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld helped organize Rick Perry's foreign policy and national security briefing in Austin last Wednesday, Rumsfeld's staff confirmed today.
Perry's aides have been tight-lipped about the gathering, which National Review reported included former Rumsfeld aides Doug Feith, Daniel Fata, and William Luti, as well as the magazine's Andrew McCarthy and others.
He (Rumsfeld) is watching the current field with interest and is particularly interested in the candidates' positions on foreign and national security policy and their prospects in winning in November 2012.

Been there.
Done that.
This would be Mister No More Troops, correct?
That’s the list of peope I want to see prepping the next president. Cool

The NeoCons are making their move on Perry.
Palin/Perry?
I say screw the foreign policy. Shut off the foreign aid. We have enough problems here in the USA to keep us occupied for a long long time. All the foreign policy experts so far have been able to muck up the world affairs to the point of being on the brink of Armageddon. We know who our friends are. Screw the rest. JMHO
After seeing this same pitch twice, I’d have to be an idiot to swing at it again.
Donald Rumsfeld is this generation's Robert McNamara. Both were arrogant know-it-alls who wasted thousands of lives.
From the Washington Post Sept 9, 2006 (yeah, I know it's leftist paper):
"Long before the United States invaded Iraq in 2003, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld forbade military strategists to develop plans for securing a postwar Iraq, the retiring commander of the Army Transportation Corps said.
Brig. Gen. Mark E. Scheid told the Newport News Daily Press in an interview published yesterday that Rumsfeld had said "he would fire the next person" who talked about the need for a postwar plan.

Probably all arranged by Rove.
Rumsfeld is one of my most favorite....way to go Perry...excellent choice.
Hard curve or slider. They are hard to lay off of.
Karl Rove says he and consultant David Weeks persuaded Rick Perry to switch parties and run for state agriculture commissioner
Texas Gov. Rick Perry draws mention in GOP consultant Karl Roves autobiography with attention
focused on Perrys win for lieutenant governor in 1998 and Rove’s role in his pivotal earlier
switch from the Democratic to Republican party while he was a third-term member of the Texas House.
Rove writes: Rick Perry had planned to retire from the legislature until his best friend,
David Weeks, and I talked him into switching parties and running for the GOP nomination for
agriculture commissioner. His book, “Courage and Consequence, My Life as a Conservative
in the Fight,” was published March 9.
Your right, the NeoCons want a establishment tolerated candidate, one they believe the can work with. I like Perry, but I like him in Texas.
Rummy always struck me as the independent thinker in the Bush camp. I’m not bothered by him helping Perry. Any governor is going to need to beef up their foreign policy/national defense cred and Rummy is an excellent resource to do that with. Would you rather it was Henry Kissinger?
I am a big Rumsfeld fan.
Perry is strong on low taxes, few regulations and job creation, with a RECORD, not just words.
Me too.
That's a first-class group of serious and experienced men. Perry is wise to seek their counsel, it demonstrates discipline and maturity, desired traits in a leader.
It would be nice if we knew whether or not any other potential or actual Republican candidate has held such a meeting.
Rummy’s plan to topple the Taliban with 200 Special Forces TOPPLES THE TALIBAN IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS!!!! Girly men HATE hi, because of this !!!! GO RICK GO!!!

Sdky, you have no idea if what you are talking about.

I think the Trademark tweeted one of those guys once.
“included former Rumsfeld aides Doug Feith...”
Uh oh. Who are we invading in 2013? I guess Syria or Iran.
Perry needs to get with a real conservative like Pat Buchanan ASAP on foreign policy, not these clowns. They had their time.
HA!
Me too. He's a man's man. But one of the reasons I like him is because of the usual suspects who despise him.
If you want another RINO hand-picked by the GOP ruling class and the MSM, that's your choice.
But when the result is the same, will you realize how stupid you are this time?
I will never forgive Bush for that pharmaceutical program he gave as a gift to the drug companies.
It ain't free enterprise when the government and corporations are in bed together.
Perry is highly capable. Obama is NOT! Big Difference
Congress approved the plan submitted by President Bush. The medication plan premiums are paid by the Seniors, who subscribed to those plans. The prescription plans have come in under budget. However, Obama is trying to dismantle them.
Oy.
Doubt it, Rove helping Perry is like Palin helping Romney, ain't to dark likely.
So what ? Only a couple of years ago, Karl Rove tried to make Sarah Palin the vice president of the United States, I don’t think the 2 of them are sending each other christmas cards this year, though.
link to that Rove / Palin thing?
Are you serious ?
Karl Rove worked for John McCain, he worked for the McCain/Palin ticket, it was his job (and he was paid well, and he failed).
Now does he like Palin ? lol, does a man like getting bitten by a dog ? Rove was opposed to Palin being on the ticket (he wanted Romney), but once she was picked, he worked to get his ticket elected. If you seriously want to read about his role, his documented role, in working for McCain (and later McCain/Palin), feel free to buy the book, "Game Change" or just google McCain and Rove.
Right, do you have links to what you’re typing?

I can also provide links documenting that George Washington, was in fact, the first president of the united states, and also, provide proof that Dick Cheney, did in fact, attempt, to get Bush elected to a 2nd term, if you want, I can also provide proof that Karl Rove, did, in fact, plot, to get Bush and Cheney into the white house, and then did this again, in 2004 (inspite of the fact, that Rove didn't want Cheney in the first place).
Karl Rove, the presidents top political hand since his Texas days, recently gave money to McCain and soon after had a private conversation with the senator. A top McCain adviser said both Mehlman and Rove are now informally advising the campaign. Rove refused to detail his conversation with McCain.
So, he gave money to the campaign, and talked to McCain.
He was not officially part of the campaign.
That’s not a Karl Rove Campaign.
And because it wasn’t a Karl Rove Campaign, Palin was not a Rove Candidate. Like Perry was and always will be.
“Karl Rove worked for John McCain, he worked for the McCain/Palin ticket, it was his job (and he was paid well,”
Prove that statement. That he was “paid well”.
Karl Rove actually gave money to McCain. And one private meeting with McCain is not “paid well”.
I’m not saying you’re wrong, but you haven’t come close to proving that Karl Rove was “paid well” by McCain / Palin.
Also, McCains campaign stated that Rove worked for them (Game change, and also the article).
How much Rove was paid, is disputed. He also worked as a so-called informal advisor to Senator Hutchinson (who ran against Perry in the recent Texas Governors primary).....
I'll concede that, since I can't prove he was paid well to try and make Palin the Vice President of the United States, but its pretty clear, he never the less worked for that campaign, and his protege Steve Schmidt (Karl Rove HAS referred to him repeatedly, in his book, and in the NY Times, he is Roves guy).
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/07/us/politics/07schmidt.html?_r=1
McCain/Palin was a Rove campaign, just as much as Hutchinson was. How much he was paid, we'll never know (though I doubt he worked for free, but hey, anyone is free to believe that).
By the way, do you consider Dick Thornburgh to be a Rove guy, and someone who will always be a Rove guy ?
It’s odd that I haven’t read about Sarah Palin’s coaches on foreign affairs.

It should have been attached to the one that mentioned Steve Schmidt....Sorry that it looked weird the way it cut out.
Crap, I just read that she had actually hired one, and that was a couple of months ago, and it was on here, but I have no idea where that article is going to be.
I know...it’s HuffPo...but worth the read.

There is no love lost between Bush and Perry.
I would call it a three way tie with Gates thrown in. We definitely do not need a third Rummy Sec of Defense tenure. I doubt one in one hundred remember his first tenure. The tenure under Gerald Ford which was the beginning of what they call the Hollow Carter Military.
Rumsfeld was W’s problem.
You are only as good as your advisers.
