Christie Tells Wealthy Donors Why He’s Not Running in 2012
National Review ^ | 7/20/11 | Jim Geraghty

Posted on 07/20/2011 7:15:27 PM PDT by Nachum

There is a fascinating, if slightly disturbing, account in Mike Allen’s newsletter from Politico this morning:

FLY ON THE WALL: Fifty of the most prized donors in national politics, including several hedge-fund billionaires who are among the richest people in the world, schlepped to a Manhattan office or hovered around speakerphones Tuesday afternoon as their host, venture capitalist Ken Langone (pronounced LAN-goan), a co-founder of The Home Depot, implored New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie to reconsider and seek the GOP presidential nomination. The governor was firm that it’s not in the cards this time, but left his spurned suitors with the impression he might well go in 2016. He impressed the audience with his emphasis on family and commitment, and flashes of disarming humor.

Langone backed Rudy Giuliani in 2008, and his guests came from both parties, although most were moderate Republicans. Most are uncommitted in the presidential race. Participants who rank on the Forbes list of richest Americans included Bernie Marcus, Paul Tudor Jones (hedge funds; $3.3 billion), Stan Druckenmiller (hedge funds; $2.5 billion) and Bernie Marcus (Home Depot; $1.9 billion). Several of them said: I’m Republican but I voted for President Obama, because I couldn’t live with Sarah Palin. Many said they were severely disappointed in the president. The biggest complaint was what several called “class warfare.” They said they didn’t understand what they had done to deserve that: If you want to have a conversation about taxation, have a conversation. But a president shouldn’t attack his constituents — he’s not the president of some people, he’s president of all the people. Someone mentioned Huey Long populism.

Perry in 2012 and 2016, then Christie can run in 2020.

Or Christie as VP, SecState, SecDef, whatever in 2016, then run in 2020.

“A little trollery at work here, perhaps?”

That would make sense. I can't believe someone would be stupid enough to have felt that way about Palin as a VP candidate.
There are truckloads of garbage being generated about Palin and Bachmann.
I think it's a deliberate campaign to discredit both. Probably not organized; but just a knee jerk type of thing.

...we have to choose one from the people we have who are running.

I love this new meme that seems to be developing here on FR, as if we've passed some imaginary deadline and no one else is allowed to enter the race. Therefore, we have to choose from those who have already entered. Frankly, the only reason to be in the race this early is to gain name recognition. I consider those the weaker candidates. Why would I decide to support a weaker candidate now rather than wait until the fall to decide once the field is set?

He really is - very articulate in a logical, common-sense way that would probably serve him well should he decide to run in the future. And of course Ann Coulter would take him in a heartbeat ;-)

They are plutocrats who continue to want their allies in office to protect and aid their plundering. The last thing they need is an anti-corruption reformer leading their party.

Yes, you are right about this. I am sick of these politicians whose wives won’t let them run (and yes, that includes Christie).

Perry’s wife WANTS him to run, so that’s good. I know he’s been labeled a RINO and is far from perfect, but whoever can beat 0bama is who should be the nominee.

Marco Rubio would be the best pick for VP, as many on this site have noted.

I’m staying in New Jersey. I am not just going to quit halfway through my term. The people trusted me, and I feel like I owe that trust and faith some fidelity.

Change New Jersey to Alaska and have a good laugh.

Yeah, and I’m bald, and Bachmann gets migraines...and Cain had cancer...are any of us in 100% perfect health?

Lenin had a term for people like these... “Useful Idiots”.

“...The biggest complaint was what several called “class warfare.” They said they didn’t understand what they had done to deserve that...”

Gee...what part of “communist” and “class warfare” don’t they get? FuBO and the Dems HATE these RINOs, will gladlt take their money and support, and then, when they get power, cheerfully have them all executed.

Stupid people will be the death of us all.

Maybe he believes Sarah isn't going to run, and he is going to go for it after Obama's second term. Of course; there won't be much of a country left by then...

People of substance will be stampeding out of the country.”

Where would they go?

Seriously?

We are the last refuge of freedom. If we blow it, there’s nowhere else to up and move to.

A lot of people are looking to Asiatic countries where they can conduct business without constant government interference. Some are considering Switzerland. Health permitting, I have a possible deal to explore outside the US, the details of which I’ll keep to myself for now. (And I am not a “person of substance” at all-—just in mourning for what has happened to the USA. If the “folks” choose socialism, I say let them have it and Buh-bye)

We will see an international version of the exodus of wealthy people from Northeastern states which imposed a “rich tax.” That type of person is just as intent on doing things their way as Obozo is on do them his. Why put up with it? There are spots around the world where they can transplant themselves and their wealth and not be despised for being successful.

If the socialists entrench themselves any further here, the “refuge of freedom” will be only a memory. And it was by our own free choice as a society.

Isn't that refreshing?!:)

However, he wouldn't have to quit unless he won the Presidency and then it would be for a very good reason.

Marco Rubio? The guy who vowed to vote vs. the Ryan budget plan and who now joined 3 other Senators (McCain, Graham and Lieberman) in approving recognition of the Libyan rebels as the official government of Libya?

I don’t think so.....
