There are in fact two things, science and opinion; the former begets knowledge, the latter ignorance. Hippocrates (c460-c.377 BCE)
My heart bleeds today... Its sad to see a giant, a champion in the world, the world superpower being brought down to her knees, brick by brick, by those who are supposed to nurture and protect her, by those who were supposed to bring improvements and make her stronger.
A few months ago, I had feared this would happen a few decades later. Little did I know how close this was and that it's happening right now, in front of our eyes, as Americans look on idly, impassively as if under the effect of an overdose of anesthesia.
However, as the month of July hits its final days, Americans not yet used to their new financial devastating situation have found the way to mentally and actually get into vacation mode regardless of the innermost crisis the country is undergoing.
July 21st, 2011, will remain a sad date in American History, but a glorious day in the personal political agenda of president Barack Hussein Obama who has succeeded in closing NASAs Space Shuttle Program, a 30-year old chapter of American science advancement and progress in world History. And at the same time, he has stopped altogether the American era of human space exploration.
Thankfully, records showing these news are there to refresh our memories: In a far-reaching restatement of goals for the nations space agency, NASA administrator Charles Bolden says President Obama has ordered him to pursue three new objectives: to re-inspire children to study science and math, to expand our international relationships, and to reach out to the Muslim world. Of those three goals, Bolden said in a recent interview with al-Jazeera, the mission to reach out to Muslims is perhaps foremost, because it will help Islamic nations feel good about their scientific accomplishments. He then added that better interaction with the Muslim world would ultimately advance space travel. Really.
NASAs Space Shuttle program, actually called Space Transportation System (STS) was the US governments manned launch vehicle program from 1981 to 2011. A manned space vehicle has a human crew and possibly passengers, unlike robotic space probes or remotely-controlled satellites.
Speaking in terms of painstaking scientific progress, this decision is Obamas stabbing in the back of NASAs neck -thought some bullfighting terminology could be quite ad hoc in this case.
As the Atlantis crew returned from a 13-day trip after they had delivered supply and spare parts to the International Space Station to American astronauts who will continue to live there, but who will from now on, have to rely upon Russian spacecrafts and private companies for future transportation. In the words of Governor Perry of Texas, our astronauts are now good for hitchhiking.
Closing this high-level American scientific endeavor results also in roughly 4,000 of our top scientists, researchers, physicists, astronomers and others to become unemployed. I dont know about you, but I feel its also a humiliating situation for the intellectual cream of the crop in our country.
Dont be surprised if in the near future you might hear that Muslim governments are opening space center(s) and offering wonderfully paid jobs to our unemployed scientists. And I truly hope I am mistaken.
Masterful stroke coming from a leader who succeeded in being chosen as the highest ranking civil servant in America and who took the oath of office of the President of the Republic of the United States of America.
As a reminder, the text of the oath, as set down in Article II, Section 1, of the US Constitution, that reads:
"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."
In direct contrast to Governor Perrys concerns, Rep. Pete Olson, R-Sugar Land, presented a more optimistic approach to the final Atlantis landing, arguing that this chapter is by no means the end of human space flight, he said, and continued: It is the beginning of the next generation of scientists, engineers and unforeseen discoveries.
However, despite Congressman Olsens remarks, yesterday was the end of Americas 30-year chapter of science advancement and an almost incomparable progress that had placed America as the uncontested leader of the pack on Earth, in the record time of barely over 200-years since her birth.
Congressman Olson said he is committed to securing NASA with resources for the next generation of human space flight. But its obvious that in this, he does not see eye in eye with this president.
In yet another surreal moment, at a White House meeting with the press, press secretary Jay Carney said the president has tremendous regard for the (space) program and for all the folks at NASA who participated in making it such a tremendous success. And he looks forward to NASAs future and moving forward with space exploration in the future. Sure. The fact is that he just closed it. Actions speak louder than words, after all.
In an interview, as shuttle ends, NASA Administrator said in an interview that he was incredibly thrilled and ... especially happy for the employees... who have made this program possible for the last 30 years... As we see, Charles Boldens tone has changed...
All that said, true to his word, Mr. Obama has now made sure to bring down Americas scientific advance as his quiet, untold, contribution so that ... it will help Islamic nations feel good about their [poor] scientific accomplishments.
The question is simply when will Americans realize the damage this president is bringing to their nation, as he advances his liberal, progressive, socialist, pro-Muslim agenda?
I may be wrong.
But what if I am not?
Eisenhower started the space program after the USSR launched Sputnik. It took a Democrat to end it.
Yeah that, Kenyan Space program is a real marvel of aerospace engineering\s
“The question is simply when will Americans realize the damage this president is bringing to their nation, as he advances his liberal, progressive, socialist, pro-Muslim agenda? “
Are the smart phones still working?! Are the malls open?! Can we still watch “Real housewives of ... “?!
Yes? No problem, no one will notice. *yawn*
Well Said! Not just any old democrat either. The most anti-American democrat ever to occupy the whitehouse! A very sad day for America. I weep for the future generation of Americans.
To disband the shuttle support team with no current access to the ISS without paying the Russians is unfathomably stupid and arguably treason. I called all my pubbie reps months ago asking that they push for at least a skeleton crew to keep the shuttle program running at least til we had a replacement program. Crickets chirping.
A local (now national) talk jock - Todd Schnitt noted that the shuttle airframe was rated for 100 launches with most shuttles only having ~ 35 launches so we could keep them running - relatively old but proven technology. Sigh.
This is probably a good thing. For many years NASA was sucking up taxpayer’s money by the billions, with comparatively little accomplished.
With government out of the way, it will give private companies the ability to compete amongst themselves and they will probably do a better job.
Not with this administration.
For decades the domestic Marxists have advocated cutting military spending and the space program. What sacred cows of the Marxists could be cut now? Welfare, EPA, OSHA, BATF, Department of Homeland Security, the Arts, Department of Education, etc., etc. Think they’ll do it? No way in Hell.
What should we expect when an ex-ACLU lawyer is dropped in the White House? The only “space” he cares about is the distance he can create between you and your money.
In my 18 year old son’s world humans have never been more than a few hundred miles off of Earth and Moon exploration is ancient history.
While I do think the Shuttles really haven’t been the greatest tech, they do work, and retiring them before there is a replacement is insane.
Personally I expect private industry to be the next step in space exploration and development, but this idiocy of shutting down the program prematurely leaves everything in the lurch.
Not to mention:
Of those three goals, Bolden said in a recent interview with al-Jazeera, the mission to reach out to Muslims is perhaps foremost, because it will help Islamic nations feel good about their scientific accomplishments.
What utter insanity.
and Welcome President Sarah Palin and Family to the White House...
The return of Class, Grace, Respect, Dignity, Honor and the Love of ALL things American..
DRILL NOW BABY...and return to a country that will take care of her own and send the Obama’s home where ever that is...
I believe Sarah will return to the Space Program and Obama can return to his Muslim faith...
The Hubble Space Telescope, Mars Rovers (Spirit & Opportunity), Saturn Cassini Project, Voyager 1 & 2, The Apollo Program, etc. "Comparatively little accomplished." Yep! That money was just wasted. Squandered it tell you!
As compared to the trillions spent bailing out banks and investment firms after the Government mandated sub-prime mortgage collapse. Now that's money invested in the countries future. Right???? Something to be proud of! Just need a few trillion more thrown down that rat hole and we'll start seeing results. Right????
Yep! Getting rid of that wasteful NASA and investing the money in today's version of Lyndon Johnson's Great Society and War On Poverty is the progressive thing to do. Why waste money on highly trained engineers and technicians when it can be used to buy beer and high def TVs for unemployable drug addicts.
You watch 'The View' a lot don't you??
A big part of it is to punish Texas and chase republicans out.
Those are amazing accomplishments, but I bet a private firm could have had those accomplished for half the price.
I won't even bother to list the myriad applications in medicine, electronics, and such that YOU enjoy as spinoffs -or touch on National Security issues - I love thinking about Space being commandeered by China, India, Russia - "He who controls the high ground..."
DUH! The money will still be spent - it will just be sent to ‘mostly Muslim countries’ - already flowing to Indonesia. Guess you're okay with that. But then, there lot of clueless Americans - or we wouldn't have a muzzie loving pres.
” NASA To Focus On Muslim Outreach - a few weeks after killing the U.S.A.s world-famous moon-mission program, Barack Obama has ordered the space agency that operates it to focus on reaching out to Muslim countries. Indeed the National Aeronautics and Space Administrations (NASA) mission will shift from space exploration to Muslim diplomacy, as per the commander-in-chiefs orders. When Obama announced earlier this month that he would slash NASAs $100 billion plan to return astronauts to the moon, he didnt mention where some of the resources would be directed.”
Some 100,000 Americans have.will lose their jobs due to this - between KSC, HoustonSC, Vandenberg and peripheral businesses that depend on the space program But that’ okay with you, huh? After all, a lot more muzziews will be employed with the money "saved" - to bring them into space sciences - like learning rocketry. Yep - that's a great plan.
One of my sons is barely holding onto his job - for the time being. He's one of TWO - can you spell that? - left in his unit that used to be 2,000. Today he goes the the air force base to help them disassemble booster rockets...they aren't even being mothballed - but destroyed. Our Muslim In Chief ain't taking no chances...
How about saving money by eliminating those upwards to 120,000 NEw government jobs - that we did fine without before - that O’Bumbles created - if money is your problem?
You sleep good now y’hear. Times fast acoming where even the clueless are going to see the truth - it ain't gonna be pretty.
