Well, that one trick that they know very, very well. It always amuses me to hear disdain from European visitors regarding America. My response to them is: "Yes, you Europeans have been veritable beacons of light when it comes to humanity and respect for human life and liberty - especially in the last century."
They usually look like they sat on a corncob after hearing that one. And if they splutter at that, I've got Jean Francois-Revel to back it up:
"It was they, after all, who made the twentieth century the darkest in history; it was they who brought about the two unprecedented cataclysms of two World Wars; and it was they who invented and put into place the two most criminal regimes ever inflicted on the human race - the pinnacles of evil and imbecility achieved in a space of less than thirty years."
Jean Francois-Revel - Last Exit to Utopia
That's game, set and match. Euros don't expect Americans to know history, and they've been ignoring their own with a will. Wakey-wakey time.
What was it that Santana guy said about ignoring history?
Based on past history Europe is long, long overdue for a major blood letting.
Well, I don’t like it.
Fascists screw up economies, and build ugly buildings and statues. They’re corrupt. They burn books (I really HATE people who burn books).
But they’re good at murder. And that is what Europe will need to resolve this issue: ugly men who are good at murder.
