A bomb blast has hit the Norwegian capital Oslo, killing at least seven people - amid reports of fatalities after a gunman attacked a nearby children's camp.
Police said there were "one or more powerful explosions in the government building in Oslo". Meanwhile, shots were fired by a person reportedly dressed as a police officer at a youth meeting of the ruling Labour Party in Utoya - an island on the outskirts near the capital.
Norwegian police said they fear there may also be explosives on Utoya island. As many as 700 people were believed to be taking part in the summer camp - most of whom were teenagers aged between 14 and 18. Police said that Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg had been due to attend the event.
Norwegian media said that one person has been arrested after the incident.
"The fact they captured him alive is a major breakthrough because they will be able to establish from him if it is an ongoing attack," he said. "The intelligence community has been expecting that a Mumbai-style attack has been imminent since a year ago. "The worst-case scenario is not just multiple attacks in one country, but in several countries.
"So we can expect to see a rise in preventative security." Security expert Bob Ayers said there are only a limited amount of things that can be done to protect people. "The only thing (authorities) can do is interfere in the planning phase before people are killed. "If you can not do that, you have to be prepared to react rapidly."

I heard on BBC this youth camp is for youths up to 25 years old.
I hear that the “shooting” resulted in several “dead” and “wounded,” and they have a “suspect” in “custody.”
There are Norwegian “nationals” with names like Sven Olafsson and others with names like Abdel bin Ummar. My bet is when the name comes out it will be more akin to the latter.

I read on Twitter (via BBC from an eyewitness, apparently) that the shooter in question is described as 6’3” or so, blond, “Norwegian-looking”.
Entirely within the realm of possibility. Perhaps a recent convert or something; the newbies tend to be the most fanatical.
Around here in Berlin (on the subway), as far as Middle-Easterners are concerned, I never take a second glance at the dudes with the long beards, turbans and flowing robes; they won’t do anything. It’s the clean-shaved, Western-looking ones that merit a second glance for me.
Norwegian police are saying now that the explosion in Oslo and the shooting in Utoya are linked. The gunman dressed as a police officer and shot up a youth center on Utoya Island.
The gunman is said to be 6ft3in and Blonde and ‘norwegian looking.’

Eye witness account from a person who arrived at Utøya to assist. There are according to his own, non-official counts at least twenty-twenty five dead bodies lying by the water. There are corpses floating in the water. Perhaps up to thirty dead.

This sounds like a co-ordinated attack, and that is certainly al-Qaeda’s style. The group claiming “responsibility” (for the bombings at least) calls itself “The Global Helpers of Jihad”, or some such nonsense. Of course, to be honest, until things are a little more settled down, and the Norwegian authorities can investigate this properly, I take that with a grain of salt. I’m not saying it’s not true, but lets face it, whenever something happens anywhere, you’ve always got some jackass(es) willing to claim responsibility. If the Yellowstone supervolcano erupted tomorrow, I can almost bet you dollars to doughnuts that al-Zawahiri of al-Qaeda would be on al-Jazeera PDQ to say they were responsible for it.

It’s going to be at least another few hours before this even begins to settle down but this doesn’t strike me as being Al Qaeda for some reason.

Right now, it does look like a prime suspect is Mullah Krekar, the founder of a Kurdish Islamist group. I’m quite sure the Norwegian authorities will be looking at him with particular interest.
He was ordered deported, and then he wouldn’t leave, and the Norwegian authorities vacillated, and he threatened that “Norway would pay a heavy price” for his deportation.
Sounds to me like he’s gonna end up in the pokey for a long time if he had anything to do with this. Perhaps we should offer to the Norwegians that we’ll be happy to assist in Mullah Krekar’s deportation: straight to Gitmo. This fellow needs to be interrogated to see what/who else he knows.
