A cryptic code sent by the Zodiac killer on November 8, 1969 to San Francisco Chronicle has baffled authorities for decades, until now.
Now a 27-year-old man is claiming he cracked this code as well as the identity of the Zodiac killer, who murdered at least seven people in the late 60s.
Corey Starliper of Tewksbury, Massachusetts, was intrigued by the case after watching a 2007 movie "Zodiac" about the killings.
He claims to have spent nine hours working on cracking the code. "I found it exciting, that I was actually able to get into his head when nobody had for over 40 year," Starliper said to Patch.com.
The code identifies "Leigh Allen" as the killer, which Starliper says refers to Arthur Leigh Allen.
Allen was a prime suspect at one point in the investigation, but was never arrested. He died at age 58 in 1992.
Robert Graysmith, who wrote a book on the case, maintains that Allen is the killer despite the difference in the handwriting.
He said: "Leigh Allen, in that situation, was forcing his handwriting to look different from the way that he normally wrote."
On the other hand, Starliper's claim to have successfully cracked the code has not been received well by San Francisco authorities and Special Investigative Units.
"It's disheartening to know that the authorities have basically shut the door on it," he said.

I havn’t changed my mind.
I’ve had an interest in the Zodiac case for some time, and I’ve seen all the so-called “solutions” to the 340 code and others. One can easily spot the fakes, because they are completely derivative, taking their content from what people think they know about the case, and offering nothing in the way of information that isn’t already extant.
My understanding is the 707 area code didn’t come into existence until the 90’s.

On the ID channel, Aphrodite Jones just did an episode on this. Some guy believes it was his late step-father. A handwriting analyst says the writing is identical, and the guy found the (alleged) long black mask in his SF’s personal effects. The police artist’s sketch and the SF’s actual pic are similar.
Anyhow, FWIW, it was interesting, and they re-run these shows often.

My family moved into the 707 area back in the mid 60s.
Was lehigh allen a publicly known suspect back when this was originally written?
There are holes in it — the writing style (when decoded) is different from previous messages. Also Leigh Allen rather than Lee Allen is suspicious. However the message itself makes far more sense than previous “solutions” I have seen. I haven’t compared this solution against the coded message so I’ll withhold judgment for now.

Just like we always suspected.
Two points:
1) There is no handwriting sample. Only hand printed samples and most all hand printing appears much the same.
2) There is no chain of custody establishing any DNA links to anyone. Therefore the DNA is essentially worthless.
This Zodiac business is a cottage industry of cultists. In all probability the case will never be solved. Personally, I am fully satisfied that Allen was Zodiac. There was no way possible to rule him out.
