Max Hardberger, a maritime repo man who recovers stolen ships from lawless Caribbean ports, has set his sights on the notorious Somali pirates
'I dont know why I like Haiti so much, Max Hardberger says, as we battle and swerve through the choking dust and chaos of Port-au-Prince traffic.
'The Haitian people are wonderful, sure, but sometimes they do bad things, especially when they get in mobs, and the country is obviously frustrating. One thing I do like is that its lawless here, which makes it much easier for me to operate.
Hardberger is a 62-year-old adventurer from Louisiana who specialises in stealing back ships that have been fraudulently seized in corrupt ports, mostly in Latin America and the Caribbean.
He describes himself as a 'vessel repossession specialist, a kind of maritime repo man who ghosts into tropical hellhole ports, outwits the guards and authorities, and ghosts out again with a 5,000- or 10,000-ton cargo ship, usually under cover of darkness and preferably during a heavy rainstorm.
A Hollywood film about his escapades is planned, with The Good Pirate as a working title, and theres undoubtedly an element of piracy to what he does.

Public notice is not what Max Hardberger needs.
He likely has a position in his group which I would consider to be an “ideal job.”
Sounds like great adventure. Also sounds dangerous as all get out.
Well, if he loves mobs, he’s gonna love Somalia. I’d say they have some of the best mobs in the world.
Great article. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it all.
Interesting piece, thanks for posting.
Hope his success holds out!
thank god this man is one of us;see’s a job opportunity and uses free will and american entrepreneur spirit and does a job that no other american can seem to pull off.....i salute him.(i do not give up salutes unless they are deserved these days).
Like him?
You’d **LOVE** the old guy who repo’s luxury aircraft for a living; he has LOTs of spies on the lookout for him, greases a lot of palms for his info; a/c controllers, limousine guys, FBO personnel, etc.
He can fly anything, it seems, and has nearly got his a$$ shot off for some of the big jobs he’s pulled (usually against African potentates, etc.).
He’s afraid of NOTHING, loves action & flying.
NO POLITICAL CORRECTNESS HERE!
This video shows Russian Navy commandos on a Somalian pirate ship shortly after the pirates had captured a Russian oil tanker. The Euro Union navy that patrols these waters would not interfere because they feared there could be casualties.
All explanations are in Russian with a single exception of when a wounded pirate says something in English and the Russian soldier says "This is not a fishing boat". All conversations between the commandos are in Russian. If you don't understand Russian, the pictures speak for themselves.
The soldiers freed their compatriots and the tanker. The Russian Navy Commandos moved the pirates back to their own (pirate) ship, searched the pirate ship for weapons and explosives and then they left the ship and exploded it with all remaining pirates hand-cuffed to it.
The commandos sank the pirate ship along with the pirates and without any court proceedings, lawyers, etc. That is, they used the anti-piracy laws of the 18th and 19th centuries where the captain of the rescuing ship has the right to decide what to do with the pirates. Usually, they were hung.
Russian ships probably will not be targets for Somali pirates.

No, I have not submitted a resume.
This guy does not need this publicity, unless he has retired. He is a dead man walking.
Maybe, just maybe, he is placing a ‘salt lick’ for the feral demons. ...
What a great couple!... I’m still lookin’ for a Paula Dean.
