Sheriff: 4-Year-Old Shot in Head While Fishing With Dad

A 4-year-old boy who was fatally shot while fishing with his father in northeastern Indiana was struck in the head by an errant bullet, a sheriff and a family friend said.

Wells County Sheriff Monte Fisher told The Associated Press on Sunday that Jacob Michuda was shot in the head late Friday night while he and his father were fishing from a pier at a pond outside Ossian, a rural community about 15 miles south of Fort Wayne.

Trisha Ulmer told The Journal Gazette of Fort Wayne for a Sunday story that the boy's mother told her the boy was shot in the temple.

Fisher said an autopsy was performed Saturday.

Forty-six-year-old neighbor Bruce Pond was being held without bond on a preliminary charge of reckless homicide and due to appear in court Monday. Fisher told the Bluffton News-Banner alcohol was involved and Pond apparently shot at a light on the pier where the father and son were fishing.

"I think it was just a freak accident," Ulmer said.

Police and medics were called to the scene at 11:07 p.m. Friday. Police said an ambulance took the boy to a hospital in Fort Wayne, where he was pronounced dead at 3:12 a.m. Saturday. Police arrested Pond later that day.

Been a rough stretch the last couple weeks here in Indiana.
I think this the 4th youngster killed.

“A 4-year-old Cedar lake boy died Thursday after accidentally shooting himself and a 2-year-old Connersville boy died July 14 after being accidentally shot by his 5-year-old brother, police said. A 6-year-old Martinsville boy died June 30 after being shot by his 11-year old brother, officials said.

In all four cases, officials said the children were able to gain access to a loaded deadly weapon inside their homes.”

There is no excuse for shooting at something that you are not absolutely positive is not a human being or someone’s pet. Or any animal out of season, for that matter.

And one should never pick up a gun while intoxicated.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

I hope this moron gets some serious jail time.

RIGHT!

A drunk shooting at lights after dark where there might be people is no accident. Manslaughter or negligible homicide at least.

One of the most difficult situations I ever encountered was a phone call from the local sheriff informing me that a young man accidentally shot and killed his younger brother with a deer slug during the Thanksgiving holiday. What to say? I was a young Pastor at the time. My first year.

Over 2 decades later as I ponder this matter . . . Saint Paul’s letter to the Romans comes to mind, as it was read the the Church this morning. Crack it open for a good read.

LORD, have mercy.

The drunks conduct approaches second degree murder. Lights are put up where people are likely to go. The lights on the pier were a clear signal that people may be in the vicinity. Shooting where people might be shows a wanton disregard for human life.

"...alcohol was involved and Pond apparently shot at a light on the pier where the father and son were fishing."

I've known some of the most seemingly poor, ignorant and backwards hillbillies, who all knew better than to play with firearms while drinking.

an angel face if there ever was one...

...I'm sure it was not intentional to shoot this precious little one but this is our society.....the attitude of "I can do whatever I want whenever I want with anyone I want whenever I want to"...

Lord, let the parents feel your presence in a very real way today. Only you are able to bring them comfort during this time of suffering.

Prayers for the little boy and his family.

What idiots like the shooter don't realize (there are quite a few both drunk and sober) is that they are playing Russian roulette with other peoples lives when they pull jerk stunts like this.

This guy needs jail time to think about what he has done.

Pray for his father as he will likely spend the rest of his life second guessing the randomness of this tragedy: if only we had left earlier, or set up a ways away.

If only...

Trying to bond with your child and give him wonderful childhood memories shouldn’t end this way.

As for the shooter...words fail.
