I'm building so far remote that the Air Force trains in the sky above. Dropping flares, dog fights and the like. Very cool.

The Eagle still looks fantastic after 30 or more years.

That particular Eagle was built in the late 70s.(There’s a 76 on the tail which designates when the contract for that block of Eagles was released)

Also, it Looks like (tough to read)the aircraft is from the Louisiana Nationl Guard.

Correct. The JZ tail flash is for the 159th Fighter Group, New Orleans, LA Air National Guard.

Referenceing the stalwart men in the driver’s seat or the machines?

I vote for the pilots drving them and the numerous other USAF personnel who make them fly.....

Key part of our nation’s true treasure.

I could make out the JZ on the Eagle but the Raptor is harder to read. It looks like the top of two T’s or F’s. FF is from Langly which is a long way from the Gulf.

Probably about 100’ apart - they are a bit bigger than they look and seem to be almost touching during air shows even though they are usually 60’-70’ apart.

Yes First Fighter is at Langley. If you see an interview with a pilot on one of the History type channels it is almost always with a Langley pilot.

I guess the fact that they are so close to Washington DC is the reason.

My father worked at Tyndall from the late 40’s to around 54. He then worked at Eglin until he retired around 1980.

Great photo! For those who share my curiosity, these are the published specifications for the two aircraft.

F-15 (Deployed 1976): Length: 63.75ft Wing: 42.83ft, Height: 18.50ft.
F-22 (Deployed 2003): Length: 62.08ft Wing: 44.50ft, Height: 16.67ft.

If they are flying fingertip in an airshow, or during weather penetration or escorting another squadron-mate, then there is a 3’ separation between the wing-tips.

In the picture here, not sure, but pretty close, less than 50' and my guess is loose fingertip meaning about 20-30' between wingtips.

Fine. “Men” in this case may mean humans of either sex (not gender-words have gender-masculine, feminine or neutral; people are of one “sex” or the other).

I remember my english grammar rules quite well. I prefer not to be politically correct and therefore tend not to cater to the weak mentality of the PC masses.

PS. A daughter is an officer in the USAF, that should get me out of “jail”.

Yea, though I walk through the Valley of the Shadow of Death, I am at 80,000 feet and climbing!

I like what you say but I still prefer John Gillespie Magee, Jr. (9 June 1922 – 11 December 1941) "High Flight"

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air....

Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace.
Where never lark, or even eagle flew —
And, while with silent lifting mind I have trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
- Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

This from an American Spitfire pilot flying at a max altitude of 35,000ft.

I have to tell ya that these look like art work to me. Awesome nonetheless. After a few weeks in service ANY airplane gets a patchwork paint look due to corrosion control measures, etc. These two look too perfect. They are beautiful though, aren’t they.

My friend's husband was a navigator in the USAF during Vietnam.

His five year old daughter was asked to write an essay at school about her father.

She cut out a picture of a man in uniform (happened to be a mail man, but she got the color right!) This was her essay....

"My daddy is in the air force. He wears a uniform and tells the pilot where to go".

God Bless 'em all.....

Around 15 years ago, my Niece was dating an F-15 pilot from Eglin. One day they visited with my parents while I was there. I happened to have just seen an interview with a First Fighter Wing pilot on TV.

I mentioned it to him and he laughed and said among other squadrons, they are known as the “Worst Fighter Wing”. I think he was half way serious.

Yes that F15 has 4 external gas tanks. The round ones that are obvious under his wings are drop tanks. So named because when moving to an Air to Air engagement the pilot can “drop” or jettison them. It also looks like that particular Eagle is equipped with what they call FAST or Conformal external tanks . They are tanks that are fitted to the side of the aircraft body. They allow carrying extra fuel and sensors, Fuel And Sensor Tactical, while decreasing the drag of the external tanks.
