Ideology: At the ballpark of the president's favorite baseball team, assorted Marxists and workers of the world, or at least of the Windy City, were set to gather Monday night to raise money to support the great redistributionist.
President Obama hasn't alienated quite all of his base with his failure to deliver on his list of promised progressive goodies. Back home in what is only half-jokingly referred to by some as the People's Republic of Chicago those who firmly believe in his dream of spreading the wealth rather than creating more of it have rallied around his falling flag.
On Monday night, a group called the People's World/Mundo Popular, perhaps gearing up for the 2012 campaign, was to hold its sixth annual tailgate barbecue and fundraiser at U.S. Cellular Field, home of the president's favorite team, the Chicago White Sox.
The event was organized by long-time Obama supporter and Chicago native Pepe Lozano, a writer for and editorial board member of the Communist Party USA's People's World. Lozano is also a key leader of the Chicago Young Communist League.
Unknown at the national level, Lozano is more of a small-time agitator, just as Obama was in his community organizing days in Chicago. "This is a history-making process," Lozano told a Chicago gathering of about 250 in June 2008, "and we will be missing it if we don't do all we can to elect Barack Obama president."
The next month, the People's Weekly World editorialized in favor of Obama, calling his a "transformative candidacy that would advance progressive politics for the long term." After all, spreading the wealth is not a far leap from Karl Marx's slogan from each according to his ability to each according to his need. Presumably the People's World will do so again in 2012.
