Donor at center of scandal still supports Edwards

Raleigh, N.C. — An heiress whose donations to former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards are at the center of criminal case against him said in a recent magazine interview that she was stunned by the charges.

Rachel "Bunny" Mellon told Newsweek that Edwards "would have been a great president" and that she still supports him.

A federal grand jury indicted Edwards last month on six felony counts related to money that was used to cover up his affair and child with Rielle Hunter, a videographer who chronicled his 2008 presidential campaign.

Federal prosecutors say Edwards accepted $900,000 in contributions from Mellon and the late Texas banker Fred Barron – far above the legal limit – and filed false campaign finance reports to hide the donations.

Edwards has maintained that the contributions were gifts and didn't need to be reported. He pleaded not guilty to the charges, and his trial is scheduled for October.

Mellon, who will turn 101 next month, met Edwards in 2006 through North Carolina decorator Bryan Huffman and told Newsweek that she immediately took a liking to the former U.S. senator.

"He was wise, he was clear, he was a very good person. I don’t like complicated people,” she said.

Federal prosecutors declined to comment Monday on the Newsweek article, and calls to Mellon's estate weren't returned.

Mellon contributed more than $3.5 million to Edwards’ issues organization and to political-action committees supporting his candidacy. According to the indictment, Edwards and top aide Andrew Young asked her for personal cash for the senator, and she obliged after becoming upset about negative publicity he received over a $400 haircut.

A woman like that doesn’t live in the real world. I’m surprised her advisors didn’t prevent her from being taken by Edwards but maybe 900k is no biggie to her.

However, she said she doesn’t like complicated people and Jackie Kennedy was one of her best friends - seems to me JK was quite complicated.

She’s over 100 years old and thought she was talking with JFK when speaking with Edwards. Hell - he probably nailed her once or twice just to get some of her millions or placed in her will.

She’s 101 years old, like my friend.

She has lived through 17 Presidents and Barack Obama.....

Unless I am missing something, the thing that tripped Edwards up in this was cheapness. He is a billionaire, yet he chose to use someone else’s money for his cover-up.

As for this woman, she is just one in the legions of misguided Americans who keep electing our escorts to serfdom.

To a socialist democrat Edwards would be a wonderful president. He's commited adultery on his dying wife. He co-mingled campaign funds to support a girlfriend, while fathering an out of wedlock child. He was a class action litigator that took advantage of the court system to enrich is own miserable self. What's not to like about him if you are a moronic liberal.
