Job listings say the unemployed need not apply
The Lookout/YahooNews ^ | 7/26/11 | Liz Goodwin

Hundreds of job opening listings posted on Monster.com and other jobs sites explicitly state that people who are unemployed would be less attractive applicants, with some telling the long-term unemployed to not even bother with applying.

The New York Times' Catherine Rampell said she found preferences for the already employed or only recently laid off in listings for "hotel concierges, restaurant managers, teachers, I.T. specialists, business analysts, sales directors, account executives, orthopedics device salesmen, auditors and air-conditioning technicians." Even the massive University of Phoenix stated that preference, but removed the listings when the Times started asking questions.

Thank you. As I say in my post at #18 - it has been rough.

We haven’t totally gotten our selves out of the hole, but we’re back filling it pretty well!

A lot of the ‘Employed” people I know are ‘Yes Men’, ‘Yes Women’ and butt kissers who make no waves often just shuffling through their daily routine. I suspect this is one of the reasons ‘employed’ people are good risk for hire... they will never challenge their new boss.

Just like in the late 70’s. Employers think they have the cream of the crop to pick from, but no one wants to move from their current job because no one knows how long any job will last; at least now they’ve got a job they know. And unemployment remains high. Thanks, employers.

So if you are looking for a tech person with a specific set of skills that may be difficult to find you should exclude any applicant sending in a resume with those skills because he is currently unemployed? Quite honestly I would fire the personnel manager who does not interview such an applicant for fear that the applicant may have sued his boss, tried to unionize,etc.. You are not going to know that until you have interviewed him and if he is a whiner or he sued his boss or walks in wearing a dress, you can trash his application. But to hamper the hiring process for fear of what you may run into in an interview for a job function requiring hard to find skills is unwise.

I have to agree with you on this. I know in my own experiences on the job, I get myself into trouble alot because I question and challenge things. I havent been and never will be a “Yes” person. I work with plenty of those mindless “Yes” zombies and they drive me nuts.

The old advice: Don't leave one job until you find a better one has always been good advice.

In the past, when times were good and unemployment low, the fact that someone was unemployed might well mean something negative. But with the recent high unemployment and large scale layoffs and outsourcing, the fact that someone is unemployed is probably less likely to mean anything negative about the individual. But it's still a disadvantage and probably always will be regardless of the economic situation. Some prospective employers will always suspect something negative, not entirely without reason.

So start a small business, give it a name, and list it as your current employer. Choose something you already do as a hobby. For me it was sewing costumes in a corner of the living room, for someone else it might be fencing lessons in the back yard, interior decorating consultations, lawn mowing, whatever.

If no one hires you, you can at least try to make a go of the business. If it’s a small enough business the taxes aren’t too bad. And it shows ambition and resourcefullness when listed on your resume. But it also means you now can apply for the “unemployed need not apply” jobs.

Millions of the “unemployed” who survive won’t buy much from those nonproductive employers in their lifetimes. Their day for demise will come soon enough. Service businesses have mostly government income recipients as their customers.

Spite them. Put some thought and work into becoming self-sufficient every day, or not. It’s up to each of you. This country can’t continue to run on debt alone for so many of the government-dependent, licensed and approved, thieving morons.

And BTW, the depression isn’t at its low, yet. It must fall to what the level of manufacturing and agriculture in the USA will support (far less, and that’s in the USA, not counting foreign manufacturing facilities owned by Americans). And the deeper depression is probably going to last ten years or more. ...probably longer. And many of us are refusing to see that foreign enemies also have their eyes on our economic situation, and those foreign enemies are building more nuclear weapons.

I see many of the employed as the polidiot employees that are slackers but didn’t get cut because of the personal politics.

This makes the unemployed the workers that got cut because they were too busy doing the work and not spending their time politicking.

Your post makes absolutely no sense to me. Why the "Thanks, employers."?

We’re in the same boat. I wish we could move to Texas but most of our biz is tied with the lib major studios. We started doing work for ourselves when we had a boss who was an absolute moron telling us what to do when we knew better than her.

I lost my job in May, had surgery in June (company knew this was scheduled) no short term disability or unemployment. I will get unemployment now since I have been released to work. I have been lucky though, my house is paid for, car is old and have no credit cards. The danger of a lay off was always in my mind (they took away seniority in January)so we bought nothing we couldn't pay cash for. My husband took my resume to his work and they promised that I would be the first one hired in September. The boss knew where I worked and I believe that he is intrigued that hubby wants to work with me. The pay will be greatly reduced but close to home and once they see what I contribute..my pay will reflect the experience I have. The HR guy from Germany said that the older people were grateful that the company hired them but kids today think that the company is lucky to have them...the company applauds this crazy thinking. Could be why I don't have a job..loyalty is not rewarded.
