A Spine Grows In GOP Land

Leadership: The tough stance taken by House Speaker John Boehner and congressional Republicans in debt talks marks a welcome new trend: GOP leaders who show guts.

It didn't start with John Boehner refusing to give in to President Obama's insistence on tax increases. This once-thought-extinct species — Republicans who have spines — has migrated to Washington from other habitats:

• New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie: Accomplishing what many believed impossible, he took some of the most powerful public sector unions head-on, suspending the lavish cost-of-living adjustments of their underfunded pensions, raising retirement ages, and insisting state employees pay more for benefits, as private-sector workers do. Christie's fate after crossing Big Labor's thugs? He's now begged, nearly daily, to run for president.

• Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker: Democratic lawmakers left the state in an attempt to prevent the passing of laws, and the Democratic National Committee helped Big Labor hold demonstrations comparing him to Hitler, physically keeping lawmakers from getting to their offices. But Walker kept his campaign vows to regain control of spending by changing the way state government works and restricting collective bargaining by state employees. Other governors are now studying this as an object lesson in executive leadership.

• Florida Congressman Allen West: Others may fear new DNC chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, but the Iraq war veteran took her on like a jihadist insurgent. "You are the most vile, unprofessional and despicable member of the U.S. House of Representatives," he wrote her, adding that she had "proven repeatedly that you are not a Lady" and unworthy of his respect. West says he won't apologize to Schultz.

Now all they need is the testicular fortitude to stick to their guns.

It’s my opinion, too, and I am also entitled to my opinion which has a huge basis in reality.

{hatfieldmccoy, that was a great one! I needed that!)

They all act like they have spines when there’s a dem in the whitehouse.

Just wait and see what happens if we put another RINO in charge.

Old “blood and guts” Boehner’s bill cuts a whopping $1Billion next year. Should I bow at his feet now to beat the rush?

So ya want me to take these (R)s serious. This man is pathetic. He can screw up a wet dream. I want to know who the fools are that vote for his bill.

You can hold off a bit because his office said he *may* rewrite parts of it. He might just end up deserving a bow and a *grovel*!

Breaking News has, once again, thrown the article’s assertion into doubt - relative to GOP House so-called leadership.

Back to BOHICA, folks.

My opinion too...especially given the FACT the CBO just told us Boehner's cuts are 800 BILLION!!!! over ten years.

Oh yeah...he's a REAL tough cookie that one.

I agree to some extent. Look at the people on the list: Chris Christy, Scott Walker, Allan West. All these people took the bull by the horns and figured a way past their problem NOW.

Now look at Boehner. Spreading his spending cuts out over 10 years. I'd say Mr. Boehner is another in a long line of can kickers. We need meaningful, serious, deep cuts NOW. Boehner has no control over nor any idea of what will happen next year. Do it now John.

The fossilized, ruling class, old guard pubbies are killing us and the country. They are left wing enablers with their “go along to get along” philosophy. Too many club lunches, cocktail parties with DC press, government teat lobbyists and a general swamp of corruption. DC kills common sense.

Hopefully he's adding three zeros to next year's cuts. I'm not holding my breath, however.

It is many times the size of the cuts he got with the CR, so he thinks he is improving.

Perhaps John Boehner really has grown a spine.

Or more likely it’s the broomstick that Ryan, Cantor and co. have shoved up his keister that’s serving as a reasonable facsimile thereof...

“The world’s saddest tangerine” (gotta give John Stewart his props for that one!) would have sold us out a half-dozen times over were it not for the Young Guns letting him know on no uncertain terms that he could not impose a bad deal on the House and that he could be replaced easily.
