The mayor of Kandahar, the biggest city in southern Afghanistan that was the birthplace of the Taliban, was killed in a suicide bombing on Wednesday, police said.

Ghulam Haidar Hameedi died when a suicide bomber set off explosives hidden in his turban when the mayor was addressing citizens in the courtyard of the city hall, police General Abdul Raziq told AFP.

He spent a long time in the States as an accountant in VA. He was viewed by the Afghanis as distant due to this, but by all accounts was sincere, committed and thankful of U.S. and allied presence. He was about as effective as a mayor in a “raw” country like Afghanistan could be, from what I’m hearing.

First, Karzai’s half brother, now the mayor. Seems to be a concerted effort at destabilization following the announcement of our exact withdrawal date by our Esteemed Overlord.

I remember reading in an article, recently, that a journalist who visited the town heard the Mayor of Kandahar say that he had not been over to the other side of town in years. Too risky.

From this perspective “they” are going after the neighbors ~ most of the top people in Afghanistan used to live around here.

You know, if you're really honest about it, Afghanistan filled with Taliban insurgents up to it's eyeballs is safer on the whole than just about all of Northern Mexico.

In Mexico they have people hanging from lampposts every day, multiple decapitated policemen's heads floating down the Rio Grande and Tijuana rivers like melons, bodies missing limbs turning up in piles outside schools, and whole towns fleeing the violence with the entire police force being the first to vamoose.

And Afghanistan is waaay over there, while Mexico keeps slithering into your living room inch by inch, day by day.

Time to call it quits in Afghanistan. We have more justification to start war with Mexico than we do spending one more minute over in Afghanistan.

His failure rate continues to rise with the latest Libya news and now this. Exactly what successes can he point to?

Successfully destroying America as we know it since Jan. 2009.

My nephew is in a Stryker Brigade in Kandahar. He was home earlier this month on leave and while he was here, his SGT and one other were killed by an IED. Dangerous, dangerous place. Scary for the family to read this kind of stuff.

"Time to call it quits in Afghanistan. We have more justification to start war with Mexico than we do spending one more minute over in Afghanistan."

I agree ole son. It's long past due that we invade northern Mexico and put a stop to their crap. Give American companies 2 weeks notice to get out and then INVADE with the full might of American military and this time no Treaty of Guadeloupe Hidalgo. Just keep the conquered territory! And I don't give one shit about collateral damage. It's time that America once again stand up against the sh*t heads of the world and protect ourselves. Political correctness be damned.

As for Afcrapistan, I don't want our Troops to have died in vain, so give the tribes fair warning: Either cut your sh&t and join the civilized world or enjoy endless daisy cutters - your choice. Again, war sucks and collateral damage happens. I want to see us go Iwo Jima on those a-holes and all the other wannabe jihadists.

Yeah, I know there are some billion Muslims. So what if they get pissed. Bet if we totaled Afcrapistan, they would become a little more humble and re-think their misogynist Sharia crapola. If they don't get the point then, kill Mecca and Medina. Wonder how that would fit into their theological/political equation? Next up - Riyadh, Saudi Arabi. Stop promoting and supporting jihad or go back to humping camels and wandering in the sand.

As for North Korea, join us or die. We're tired of you threatening Western peace. You too, Hugo...don't even think about aligning with Iran because they are on the list, also. We prefer not to kill the western-loving Iranian citizens, but just if they continue to test us...

This news gives me the willies.

Anyone else put in mind of the assassination of Ahmad Shah Massoud a couple of days prior to 9/11?

I will tell you what. My son is in Kandahar Province. He earned his CIB within 1 week of arriving in country. It went downhill from there. They moved his platoon from a FOB to a COP and it got REAL ugly. 2 of the squads were down to 1 man each. They have had only one minor firefight in the past week and a half. It does not go stone quiet like that. I am more nervous now.
