World needs needs Tequila power: report (Better Bio-fuel)

Agave a better biofuel than sugar cane

Agave produces a highly-efficient intoxicant, as anyone who’s woken up “Wasting Away in Margaritaville” can attest. According to a joint Sydney University / Oxford University study, the plant could also be a highly-efficient feedstock for biofuels...

[Agave is] an arid plant, which means it’s suitable for regions where food crops are at best marginal...

By moving ethanol feedstock away from high-quality farmland, agave-driven ethanol production would therefore solve one of the conundrums of biofuels: the accusation that corn- or sugar-based ethanol production displaces food production...

Study of a trial plantation near the regional Queensland town of Ayr has found that costs and profits should be similar to the sugar cane industry.

> Who wants to wait for ten years to get the first crop from agave?

Point taken... It would require someone with a long-term view, I imagine. After the first crop starts producing, then it just rolls on ad infinitum. But that initial wait is sort of a bummer.

For the maker of tequila it might make sense but for bio-fuel?

That's where using sewage to oil would have such an advantage, a waste product is used as a stock, and both oil and an a completely sanitary charcoal like product could be made for fertilizer avoiding having anything to landfill.

Nothing too esoteric or complicated.

Tippling the merchandise?

Getting tanked on what’s for the tank?

Sampling the stores?

Siphoning off some of the profits?

Agave at the office?

Sounds promising, let the market decide.

Asbestos underwear on now- IMNSHO burning tequila is the best possible use for it.

I always saw biofuels as less of an energy solution and more of a waste management solution. Getting rid of grease from restaurants is a nasty business.

Agreed- even a new vineyard can produce something drinkable after five years.

Figures they'd discover this while studying joints. Wait, what?

Have you ever seen an angry SUV after a 3-day drinking binge? Put tequila in your tank? Only if YOU stay up with it cleaning up vomit all night!

Sure thing (slurp) no prob' (snork) just a sec... I'm licking the last of the (slurp) guacamole out of the bowl....

Once under the spell of agave I put some of Dave's Ultimate Insanity hot sauce on a chip and ate it. Took me 5 minutes to get back to the point where I could breath. Another 10 minutes before I could speak.

More agave nectar to rinse the burn away.... might have been Patron, I honestly don't recall. Great stuff!!

So-called Scientific American has some anti-biofuel screed in the current issue.
