Unions hit Cantor, other vulnerable Republicans on debt ceiling
The Hill ^ | 7/28/11 | Cameron Joseph

Liberal group Americans United for Change is teaming up with a trio of large unions to air television ads attacking House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) and seven potentially vulnerable Republicans for stance on raising the debt ceiling.

The targets: Sen. Dean Heller (R-Nev.) and Reps. Denny Rehberg (R-Mont.), Steve King (R-Iowa), Lou Barletta (R-Pa.), Chip Cravaack (R-Minn.), Bobby Schilling (R-Ill.) and Ann Marie Buerkle (R-N.Y.). All are potentially vulnerable members who live in inexpensive media markets. Rehberg is running for Senate.

The unions participating in the six-figure ad buy are the Service Employees International Union, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and the National Education Association. The ads will run from Friday through Monday.

"If Congress doesn’t act by Tuesday, America won’t be able to pay all of its bills," one version of the ad begins. "

Social Security checks, veterans benefits, military pay -- all could be at risk because Congressman Bobby Schilling and Congressional Republicans want to protect tax breaks for millionaires, oil companies and corporate jets.

So if the check you or your family depends on doesn’t arrive thank Congressman Schilling.
Tell Congressman Schilling to stop holding the interests of ordinary Americans hostage."

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) had to cancel a planned vote on his plan to raise the debt ceiling Thursday night for the next six months because he could not get enough conservative Republicans to support it. It is unclear what, if any, deal can get enough support to get through both chambers of Congress before Tuesday.

As is obvious, Obama determines the priority for the money that exists. But you will NOT hear that on any MSM network.

What the hell are they “hitting” them on?

Unions want a debt ceiling hike?

All polls basically say the public doesn’t want it. They also dont want tax hikes, and they dont see Obama and the Democrats as good guys.

So I say GO FOR IT! The unions have been blowing money like mad lately, and failing all over the map. Why not run some more ads people are going to DVR past.

They are “vulnerable” for not going along with Obama’s economic policies (which are polling at about 20% approval).

LOL!

And the lib media laps it up as if it’s legit.

This needs to be countered.

Few can realistically get their heads around any number greater than million, but almost all of us understand the consequences of overspending our income on a daily basis.

It should be extremely easy to create an effective commercial denouncing our debt, debt ceiling and deficit spending using an ordinary household budget as an example.

In fact, maybe we should bring back the 'debtor's prison' and apply it to Congress. They can go from being untouchable, overpaid servants of their constituents to indentured servants working off the bills they've charged in OUR names.

It doesn’t need to be countered, it’s a stupid argument.

How many private citizens do you think can entertain the choice of increasing their debt ceiling when they can’t make their payments? How many is this a viable option for?

The unions/democrats/MSM’s argument is so stupid it should just be left alone.

All polls basically say the public doesn’t want it.

The public is basically schizo. They want the government to cut spending, but if you specifically mention the programs where the real money is, they don't want cuts in those.

Nibbling around the edges in discretionary spending isn't going to do it.

Then you have Democrats lying through their teeth.

Until we get a president who will look us all in the eye and tell us the unvarnished truth and present a plan that will REALLY work, we're going nowhere.

Since Cantor is an historic figure ... the first Jewish majority leader of either party, it seems SEIU and other radical left-wing unions are exposing themselves as anti-Semitic partisans. How sad it is that anybody would associate themselves with such vehement 1940’s-style hatred.

We find ourselves in this financial/liberal/progressive disaster in part because we let every opportunity to educate our fellow Americans pass us by.

Advertising works. Assuming that people get it and doing nothing doesn't.

This is a teaching opportunity and should be treated as such.

Unions don't have a whole lot influence in Virginia, but I'm happy to see them wasting their members' money on pointless, and ultimately fruitless, attack ads.

A union sponsored ad attacking Eric Cantor should have about the same effect in Virginia’s 7th District as an NRA ad attacking Nancy Pelosi would have in hers.

“Americans United for . . .” always sets off alarm bells. It’s in the same league as “Peoples Democratic Republic of . . .”.

“Service Employees International Union, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and the National Education Association”

So these are all government unions trying to keep an elected representative from representing the people who elected him?

?

The Unions are dysfunctional at this point anyway, they assume the public wants them to have their tax money.

Must have been that “Let’s pass a bill to cover the Moon in yogurt for $5 trillion and then tomorrow, nullify the bill and call it $5 trillion saved” that got the unions worked up./s =.=
