Speaker John Boehner pushed his debt-ceiling bill through the House Friday night with the support of 218 Republicans. Here are the 22 no votes:

Five Democrats didn’t vote. Among them, three were California Democrats: Reps. Maxine Waters, Jackie Speier and Joe Baca. The two others, Reps. Gabrielle Giffords (Ariz.) and Maurice Hinchey (N.Y.) have been absent for medical reasons.

Well, I’ll make one observation: those 218 Repubs. who voted for this turkey couldn’t have done so on principle because it doesn’t do beans about changing the spending/debt trajectory that is overwhelming us. This bill makes a very small cut to the future INCREASE in spending, and almost all of that is in the “out” years.

Honestly I don’t think most FReepers know what their congressmen are up to when nobody’s looking let alone how clueless the general population is.
He’s gotten a $20 million cut from funding for the arts (he asked for 50) He’s gotten some OSHA regulations rolled back for small businesses. He’s sponsored a bill to halt the mandate that insurance companies use faulty FEMA maps. He supports the small business paperwork elimination act. He’s voted against tax credits for wind energy and signed the no climate tax pledge and has officially stated that cap and trade has zero impact on global temperatures. He’s also cosponsored or sponsored every domestic energy bill to pass in front of him. He also has a lifetime ACU rating of 98%.
I can accept one vote I disagree with.
If Maxine waters, baca and speier were there...then perhaps they had to wait to see if those Dems voted...because had they voted then Boehner would have needed the last minute votes.
I don’t understand it.
Our system of government was specifically designed such that if the House, Senate and President don’t agree on something, it doesn’t become law. The idea was that if there was not a general consensus on something then it was not reasonable.
Even then laws are subject to general judicial review and even then may not be enforced by the executive (See the Alien and Sedition Acts http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alien_and_Sedition_Acts#Aftermath).
What we are facing today, inevitable bankruptcy due to political weakness, is not reasonable. It should not become law.
You seems to get the balances part right but skip over the checks part of Checks and Balances.

I would vote in favor of “shared sacrifice” if it means having the 49-51% who pay nothing start paying part of the burden. Otherwise, NO.

No, you got that backwards. RummyChick listed the names of those who waited, which didn’t include any South Carolinians.
Five minutes before the vote, I called Rep. Steve Southerland’s office and they told me he was voting No. And he did.....
Now I’m confused. The article says, “the entire GOP South Carolina delegation waited until the final seconds to cast their not vote” but the list below includes them in the first part (along with Bachmann, for instance) and then says, “Other GOP members — and one Democrat — waited until the final minutes to cast their votes.” [And lists some Republicans (none of them South Carolinians) along with the one Democrat Lloyd Doggett]

Representative Rokita: I was hesitant to throw my support to you in the last election. Steve Buyer left some big shoes to fill. I knew that as SOS, you had let an ineligible candidate on the ballot. I listened and read the endorsements and reassurances of your supporters and eventually I decided to vote for you. I had hoped that you would live up to your election rhetoric, and wouldn’t have to call you or worry about how you would vote on crucial issues, such as the latest spending cut and debt ceiling proposals. I was wrong. So I’m telling you now, I would hope that as a conservative, you would not support ANY bill that raises the debt ceiling, or calls for new revenues (taxes). I would also hope that you are wise enough to understand that without DRASTIC, immediate spending cuts, our future as a country is going to disentigrate. I have two teenage daughters and I truely fear for their future. It is time for all Republican Representatives and Senators to decide whether they will fight for the TEA party principles, or continue the self perpetuation of the GOP elites. Rest assured we are watching your actions. Senator Lugar will be replaced in the primaries, and any other ineffectual office holders will be as well.” Yes I am mad. You are aware 4-6 of the “no” votes were quickly changed from “yes” votes at the end of voting...so 4-6 yes votes had “their a$$es in line” as per Boehner if needed. No way to tell who they were....
Exactly. I don’t understand why people are so afraid of a shutdown. That is what is supposed to happen when the government starts doing things that a majority do not agree with.
It is well-established that there is enough revenue with no new borrowing to pay our debts, our troops, law enforcement, judiciary, and SS/M. A shutdown hurts nobody but government employees in agencies that should not even exist under the Constitution, and government dependents relying on other benefits like foodstamps, housing assistance, Medicaid, etc. We have more than enough revenue to pay for everything that is actually Constitutional, plus the unConstitutional SS/M. Why on Earth would we borrow more money ?
Something people never mention about interest rates going up due to a credit rating downgrade: if you don’t borrow money, it doesn’t matter what the interest rate is. In fact, if you save money the higher interest rates on savings accounts tied to bond issues rewards you. I don’t borrow money and I’m sick of earning 0.25% interest on my savings.

The only 22 people in the house that I can respect. May their names go down in history as the only ones who tried to save America. And may the hypocrites here on FR get what they deserve in the end. Me too. Let’s talk about eliminating all the exemptions, deductions and credits that allow that bottom 50% to contribute less than 10% of their Adjusted Gross Income in Federal Income Taxes. I don’t care how many kids you’ve got, how big a mortgage you took on, or how many solar panels, electric cars, or windmills you bought — pay 10% of your GROSS income.
And I specifically include the fact that a hundred million workers have $10,000+ in employer-paid benefits that are part of their total compensation but are not counted as income for tax purposes. If you receive health insurance, education reimbursement, 401k matching, company vehicle or cell phone, reimbursed meals, or stock options, it should be treated and taxed just like you received cash.
Remember, if EVERYBODY paid 10%, NOBODY would need to be punished with higher rates.

I think the fact they held out tells Senate Dems that conservatives aren’t happy with the bill and they’ll have a very tough time sending back something worse.
The economy is on Obama. He’s not going to be able to blame Republicans — though he’ll certainly try.
Debt downgrade and further tanking and Obama will be in the 30’s. That’s the point where someone will Primary him. If a candidate or two pops in... might we see Hilary step up? She wouldn’t want to be the first but if the water is already muddy she may wade in...
EXACTLY! It's like I said up-thread, unless one of the 22 NO votes decide to spill the beans, we will never know who were the potential sell-outs. If no one talks, then ALL 22 are complicit in this deception.
Ya know, I don't know why I get upset about crap like this. I've been on this planet long enough to know that this is what politicians do. They lie, cheat, deceive and obfuscate. It doesn't matter which side they are on ideologically. It is their nature...they can't help themselves.

It very well may be that a "NO" vote on this bill does NOT mean what you think it does. A vote against a bill that is still undecided is a principled stand. A vote at the gavel against a bill that already has enough votes for passage is a deception.
I've got to wonder why Boehner or any of the other candidates won't even mention it.
I think perhaps the problem is in the wording.
Some waited until the final seconds. Some waited until the final minutes.

You and I are on the same page on this. I want these potential sell-outs to be uncovered for exactly what they are....political opportunists....and certainly not “heroes.”
If it was the South Carolina people..I don’t know that I would call them a sell out.
I don’t think they would have gone against Demint on this one.
Why would they wait?
I can see a few reasons.
But the one that made sure Boehner had the votes was the very last vote by his Buddy.
I must be blind....I can only see one.
They could have been trying to trip someone up into thinking that they might vote yes.
The tripped up person covers himself by voting no.
It is a plan that probably wouldn’t work but maybe they gave it a try.
And the question is..why didn’t Maxine Water, Baca, and Speier vote in this down the wire vote.
I theorize it is because they wanted this Bill to pass and their votes would have required Boehner to get more yes votes.
