UPDATE 1-Iraq says to buy 36 F-16 fighters from US

11:10am EDT

(Adds comments from Maliki)

BAGHDAD, July 30 (Reuters) - Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki said on Saturday his government would buy 36 F-16 fighters from the United States, doubling the number of aircraft it had initially planned to buy to strengthen its weak air defences.

The announcement of the deal came as Iraq and the U.S. government discuss whether to keep some U.S. troops or military trainers in the OPEC country after the planned withdrawal of the last American soldiers at the end of the year.

"A delegation from the Iraqi Air Force along with advisers will travel to revive the contract to include a larger number than the contract had agreed before... we will make it 36 instead of 18," Maliki told reporters.

"We have to provide Iraq with airplanes to safeguard its sovereignty," he said.

Iraq's air force is one of the weakest branches of its armed forces, which are still battling insurgents and militias more than eight years

Maybe they’ll come with support techs from General Dynamics who could discreetly damage some of the innards like the Grumman techs allegedly did to Iran’s F-14s when Khomeini came in. Supposedly the planes were flyable, but weren’t worth a damn as to their advanced capabilities after that.

Yes, sell them, but put back door circuits in the key equipment to make the airplanes unflyable via remote control if they should be used against us or an ally.

Believe this when they are on the tarmac at Balad and/or Tallil. This has been going back and forth since 2007. Numbers have ranged from 18 to 96 but, NO SIGNED CONTRACT...
