Democrats' debt-ceiling bill failed to clear a key Senate hurdle Sunday afternoon, putting the onus on bipartisan negotiators to come up with an alternative plan with just two days to go until the Treasury runs out of ways to pay all of America's bills.
The vote on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's plan was expected to fail. Sixty votes were required to advance the proposal, and it fell far short in a 50-49 roll call.
The focus now turns almost exclusively to the latest round of talks being conducted among White House officials and Senate leaders. After disagreeing about the status of those negotiations the day before, Senate leaders indicated Sunday that they were making good progress on the new proposal.

I believe he voted with the DEMS because he thinks it will enhance his reelection campaign. He is of a mind that his constituency leans hard to the left.
I haven't thrown Brown under the bus. I just know him for what he is . . . a Republic . . . and not to be counted upon in a pinch when we will most need him. Just like Snowe, Collins, Hatch, McCain, etc, etc, etc.
That means Dingy Harry lost more than 3 Democratic votes. How many RINOs voted for cloture and how many Democrats voted against it?
“I have to curtail this post. If I keep going, Ill say something intemperate.”
You mean like, “They’re trying to crash the economy on purpose?”
My sentiments exactly but I am amazed that even Brown would stoop that low on the GOP side.
Somebody needs to step forward to give the rat a stiff primary challenge. And we need to step forward to help financially.
Talk about being in bad company!
Congressional Budget and Impoundment Control Act of 1974
Balanced Budget and Emergency Deficit Control Act of 1985
Budget Enforcement Act of 1990
Balanced Budget Act of 1997.
Restoring Fiscal Discipline Act of 2007
Yep, just one more bill ought to do it.
Why not just call whatever they pass The Kick the Can Down the Road Bamboozlement Act of 2011 ?
Actually, he’s up for re-election in 2012. Unfortunately, it will be either him or a Marxist Kennedy clone.
Where is that Simpson’s pic
The one that goes
HaHa!!!
Scott Brown voted for it because he is a leftist socialist statist.
I knew he was bad from the beginning. He ran against the spawn of Satan but otherwise he was not any good.
You gotta love the picture of McConnell in this story.
Pinky Reid’s DC staff is answering phones LIVE today!
I just called and told them to accept CC&B.
If you are not one of his constituents it is still acceptable for you to contact him as Senate Majority Leader Reid.

Reid voted down his own plan so he could bring it back again with the new deal alternative. This is all kabuki political theater.
So Reid voted against his own bill?
Also, looks like Nelson wants to be re-elected. Manchin wasnt much of a surprise.
Nonsense. Pelosi’s House Dems are on the hook to pass this crap sandwich.
THAT is why is it was essential that Boehner’s bill passed on Friday - it demonstrated just how far his conference could go.
Now that they’ve packaged a deal suitable to Obama, House Dems have to come on board and support their president. Most of the GOP caucus can vote NO.
Bottom line: Obama and the RATS continue to OWN the economy. They will OWN the downgrade as well. GOP is off the hook.
That's about right for the New Englander Al Bundy-like shoe salesman truck driver turned senator. It's still the Kennedy's seat after all!
I sure hope Scott Brown gets a primary challenger! He won in part by sounding like a conservative and reaping the full support of the TEA party. From the minute he was sworn in, he’s been bff with the Maine sisters and other backstabbing RINOs. Howie Carr dismisses it all as SB representing a deep blue state, and doing what he has to do to get reelected. Spit! If MA wanted another Dem, they’d have elected one. They thought they were getting a Republican, and got a shameless RINO, if not an actual Dem, instead.
But most of all it’s just the way SB sounds when he talks. He could already pass for a guy who’s been in DC for twenty years. How did he get that way so fast? It’s scary/appalling. I hope to goodness they primary his fanny back home to MA; he can’t leave DC fast enough for me.
Their current leadership and policies in Washington is not even recognizable as the party of Truman and Kennedy. Nancy Pelosi happily marched vulnerable Democrats off the cliff to obtain their policy goals. These gains will be protected at all costs.
I have been watching this march on the road to ruin for almost 50 years. These people are determined. Compromise after compromise they have moved the USA closer and closer to the socialist model.
We have increasingly been forced to live by rules a majority of Americans do not like. At each point, a seemingly “reasonable” compromise was reached, they came back for another demand.
Anytime the Dems gain control, they obtain rapid change. When not in control they still have enough power to stall, protect gains, and take smaller steps forward.
What is important to them is the advancement of the plan, not losing colleagues who were probably not as dedicated to the plan as they would like anyway. The foot soldiers in these battles are always expendable. Those soldiers inhabit both parties.
I figure we have 2 years more or less to turn the tide, and begin the march back toward freedom. If this continues we'll face the fate of all other Republics before us. A “time for choosing” is here again.
Will we abandon the principles of our foundation and turn our lives over to “a little intellectual elite in a far distant capitol” or will we stop the advance “into a thousand years of darkness?”
If the elections succeed in ousting the radicals, and we successfully advance the cause of freedom, I do not expect this group to go quietly.
After-all, so many of them either participated in or are sympathetic to the violence of the 1960’s. They have not repented, they merely camouflaged themselves to fit in better.
What will they do next? Get prepared. Win, lose, or draw we are in for rough times ahead.
Since Brown comes from Mass. the likelihood is that his constituents are to the left. Most elected pols like being reelected so they are not going to antagonize their constituents.Brown, as far as I know, made no statement similar to those Tea Partiers who pledged that reelection was of little personal consequence. Since I don’t live in Mass., I can’t get excited over Brown’s vote.
It is not too late to let your congress critter know how you feel. Let them know, in no uncertain terms, that any vote that advances a debt ceiling increase will result in their being primaried out of office next year, then get off your butt, and work, contribute, volunteer, do whatever is required to see that your promise to them is kept.
