NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wild boar are invading the farms of central New York state, attacking livestock, killing family pets, chasing people and posing "devastating consequences" for the area, federal officials warn.
The feral swine are a non-native species suspected of escaping from game farms, and as many as a couple of hundred are roaming the state, said Paul Curtis, a natural resources professor at Cornell University.
While an exact picture of the wild boar population in New York State is unclear, a report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture said the swine were successfully breeding in the three counties and producing litters averaging 4 to 6 piglets.

This guy at the range today was telling me that wild boars breed like crazy, and the females have several litters a year ....
What's to fund? Hunters could take care of that problem.

I once encountered a large area on Gregory Bald, high in the Great Smoky Mts. Nat. Park, where the sod had been completely demolished, as if it had been turned over with a rototiller. The rangers told me that wild boars did that by rooting in the soil.
I watched a problem a few months ago about this problem. Of course they probably exaggerated a bit, but the boar population is increasing dramatically, and yes, they are VERY hard to thin out, they breed like crazy, can eat just about anything, and are potentially very dangerous to humans and animals.
Where I live, I have seen wild boars, know people who hunt them, and the stories are impressive. Single wild boar taking out a couple of trained pit bulls. Taking several shots before finally going down. It really is becoming a problem nation wide.

Getting chased and harassed by wild boars is just another in the long list of things we’re expected to put up with in order to “protect the environment.”

I have many times in Texas.....Don’t miss and drop them with the first shot. They tend to get a lil pissed when just nicked and of course they just love to get you close to them. Very up close and personal...they love it lol
Here in Wisconsin hunters are allowed to shoot wild pigs on site. I’ve yet to see a wild pig alive or dead while driving on the roads in the area. Supposedly there’s a very large population of the critters in some of the counties south of where I live.

Sell tags to hunters. Use a portion of the revenue to publish recipes.

They're not too bad if you deep pit them, but most folks throw the meat away and eat the rocks.

I've edited a number of articles about wild hogs in the last few years. To the best of my recollection, they are considered an invasive species in every state. A hunter still has to follow whatever hunting and/or gun rules exist in his state, but IIRC the wild hogs can be taken at any size/age, with any permitted weapon, and as many as the hunter wants to kill. They breed maniacally, eat anything, and are crazy dangerous, even at a relatively young age.

Over a year ago, on one of the main highways here, someone hit a black hog and it died right next to the road looking like it was sleeping with it’s head resting upright. It is still recognizable, even after all the heat we’ve had here. I pass by there almost every day and have never seen a buzzard on it once.
This may be God’s way of preparing us for survival. When there’s nothing on the shelves those of us with ammo and guns will never have to worry about food. Plus, this means we would survive but the leeches won’t.
Seriously, you’d think there are enough people to go out and eradicate them. If some rancher or farmer around here asked people to come kill pigs I’d answer the call.
Only when they are yoiung, under 100 lbs. they are an absolute plague here in south Texas, they kill fawns and any young things they can get hold of including ground-nesting birds, they destroy fences, uproot wetlands, threaten people and breed like flies.
Nobody seems to know what to do about them.

Actually, they do have some pretty hard heads. It may not take a 90 degree shot, but any smaller round can easily glance off them. I have a friend from OK who had issues with them, and they had .30-06 bouncing off them. Head shots are not the best idea on these guys, unless you’re behind them :p
Years back, before Mother Earth went Boomer, one guy wrote in that he had a few acres of scrub brush on his farm and asked the best way to clear it. Some old farmer in Missouri wrote back that he should fence the area in and turn loose some hogs. The place would be cleared - and fertilized in no time.

We have them on our place in Texas also. Didn’t really know how many we had since they are fairly nocturnal here, until we put up game cameras. WOW we’ve got a lot!
Some hunters in TX use Great Danes. I have a 5.5 mo. old Dane puppy who's nothing but a love muffin who lies to sleeep with me (I know, the Dog Whisperer and the Dog Lady would both say I've allowed him to develop a terrible habit). He probably wouldn't qualify.

What the heck is a game farm?
A couple of hundred? They think there are only a couple of hundred and they are causing this much trouble? I think they better count again. CA has many, many wild hogs, they are a mix between imported Russian boar and domestic hogs released back in the day when hog farming went bad in the coastal areas. They multiply like rabbits.
Except for Monterey county the limit for wild hogs on the coast of CA is one a day and one in possession. Enough people hunt them to keep them down to a manageable level.
This is what NY needs to do, open season on the suckers and they will soon learn to stay away from humans.
BTW, the reason the season is different in Monterey county is because the hogs there have more of the Russian boar in them then other parts of the state. They get huge and have those wicked looking tusks.

While we're on the subject ..... Some Cuban guy in Miami invented this thing: "La Caja China" (The Chinese Box).
I've seen one in action and it will cook a 64 pound whole hog in 3 hours and 40 minutes with a few bags of charcoal. They are very popular in Miami.
