SHANKSVILLE, Pa. (AP) The western Pennsylvania site where United Airlines Flight 93 crashed after passengers confronted hijacking terrorists during the Sept. 11 attacks almost a decade ago is being marked by a gigantic boulder.

a decade later and all we've got for a memorial to the heroes of Flight 93 is a big rock????
It is a national disgrace, a moral disgrace, that we cannot manage a proper memorial to the heroes of Flight 93 in a decade since that event.
Exactly what I was thinking...
Why not just make it a replica of the Kaaba? (/sarc)
What happened to that abominable crescent plan? i hope that’s gone for good.
and Cresent Moon
The terrorists won. Spectacularly.
I thought they were going to build a crescent shaped memorial.
10 years and all we’ve got for a memorial is a big rock.... unreal
What did you expect? A giant cresent moon?
That will come later after our heroic congresscritters have allowed sharia law to become established.
If it crushed the crescent, it’s a victory boulder.
The public didn’t want the crescent shaped memorial, so they got a huge boulder.
This is life under the Obummer Regime, we must get used to it.
You mean plans have been abandoned to build a crescent shrine commemorating Islam’s triumph over American infidels?
It appears as though the Islamofascists’ Victory Trophy Mosque at Ground Zero is going to be completed before any of the memorials to the Americans they murdered will ever be completed. What a disgrace.
Give them time. Before long it will have it's own "Dome."
well that’s true, a rock is infinitely better than that crescent design
It’s better than what commissioning a monumental artist would produce: A couple of fake waterfalls with a list of names etched underneath, like the WTC memorial. Big boulder can later be replaced. Fake waterfalls are forever.
Crescent moons, pink hearts, and green clovers. They’re always after me lucky charms. I’ll hijack a plane and get away. Oops. The passengers have revolted. CRASH! Lost his lucky charms, tragically delicious.
looks like we’re still going to get a version of the crescent, what they are calling a “Bowl” area of the final memorial:
It’s just that our country can no longer walk and chew gum, or complete something in under 10 years, so it’s only “Phase I” that is expected to be completed in time for the 10th Anniversary.
Someday, there may be big rock memorials all over North America commmemorating the patriots who died defeating the socialist government and restoring the Constitution.
Besides, I’d rather see a big rock than one of these over-planned memorials packed full of politically-correct symbolism that is meaningless if you don’t have the guidebook in your hand. Only the US government can screw up a memorial.
But, we live in a statist hellhole. So, we must have a concrete monument to the Homeland!
I think they want us out of the Middle East and to stop giving Israel so much help. So even though they've caused us to be an ickier country to live in, I don't think they would agree that they've won yet.
no, we must get rid of it
Seems kind of Muslimish. Will there be a call to prayer five times daily.
“Not that there is anything wrong with that.”
(Close, think that the way it goes.) Bit by bit, step by step, they are wanting the Great Satan to be theirs.
True, sorry I forgot the s/.
Looks like the “crescent” aspect was modified somewhat after opposition, but the original design was definitely presented as a “crescent” —
Critics See Symbols of Islam in Flight 93 Memorial Design

SOMERSET, Pa. As envisioned by its designer, the memorial to the victims who died on Sept. 11, 2001, when United Flight 93 crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pa., would follow the topography of the bowl-shaped land, creating a circular pathway ringed by trees, all focused on the sacred ground of the crash site near the bottom of the circle.
Have you ever been there?
Yup. Three billion dollars sure does go a long way. Will we ever get around to using those loan guarantees from the Bush I era? I think they’d much rather the US, instead of giving Israel aid, actively helped them destroy us (Israel). Also, back in 2001, the US wasn’t much in the Middle East, and they still attacked. I think what “they” want from the US is that everyone either convert to Islam, and only their form of Islam, PDQ, or die.
That’s what the plan was to have, a huge crescent shaped memorial pointing to Mecca. What happened to it? A boulder sure beats this insult to those that died:
Rather a big boulder than a crescent moon.
It ought to be a gigantic middle finger, pointing straight at Mecca.
Knowing what is or isn’t being done for memorials at the 9/11 sites is as elusive and confusing as knowing how much of that 700 mile border fence was ever built.
Our government is pathetic and unreliable in far too many ways.
Cool camera link. Looks like it’s still under construction.
I didn’t see a big rock though.
as Congress sez; “what have such people done for me lately”?
So what happened to the land that was confiscated and the money that was collected for it?
“It ought to be a gigantic middle finger, pointing straight at Mecca.”
Well, if any Freepers living out that way should happen to have a power chisel and some sculpting talent, by all means, go there in the middle of the night, and sculpt your hearts out on that giant rock. There’ll be a fitting spontaneous memorial on that site yet.
all we’ve got for a memorial to the heroes of Flight 93 is a big rock????
and the wrong rock
We need to have The Rock represented there
a gigantic cross would to the trick...
I noticed they are planting sweetgum trees instead of RED maple, thats a good sign. No red cresent.
Better nothing than a crescent or mosque
What do expect from PA.
The US Government can and usually does screw up a hand full of wet sh!t
I hated the idea of the rock but now...a large rock...strong...overpowering...like the heroes of flight 93. I do like your idea of a huge cross...any thought of a muslim memorial plan would be overshadowed by the cross.
In a perfect world, the boulder would represent what the US did to the entire Islamic world: turn it into a lifeless pile of rubble.
Does the big boulder have gang signs on it yet?
Why does there need to be a memorial of any kind? It’s a field, plant a crop.
