July 29 marked the anniversary of Arizona's controversial immigration law, SB 1070, the state's toughest attempt to target unauthorized immigration since the 2007 Legal Arizona Workers Act. Since then several states -- most notably Georgia, South Carolina, and Alabama -- have passed similar laws. However, Arizona has actually hurt itself by targeting unauthorized immigrants. Other states should learn from its experience before following it down the same path.
SB 1070 proponents claim that it decreased the unauthorized population in the state, and they're probably right. But for that "achievement," SB 1070 likely slowed Arizona's recovery by increasing the regulatory burden for business and raising the cost of hiring all workers in Arizona.
Republican Gov. Jan Brewer vetoed slews of bills that would have reduced government expenditures and lowered taxes. The same poor fiscal policies prevailed in New Mexico. The difference in New Mexico is that it hasn't passed immigration regulations that burden businesses.

What a load. This clown is clueless.
What a crock of crap!
It’s like saying that our laws against theft are preventing the economy from growing because it limits the income of thieves.
FUBO & FAD
Sounds like a flawed analysis to me. Many illegals send the money they earn back home. If those jobs now go to US Citizens, the money is spent in the state and will actually improve the economy.
Are they talking about ObamaCare, Dodd-Frank financial regulation bill, and unions?
So a bank robber is making an unauthorized withdrawal?
Yeah, and the fiscal year closing June 30th showed an 11% increase in revenue over the previous year, which is the most in 4 years. AND that was double the expected increase.
Yeah right. I sooo believe this article. /s
Well of course we all know that it will be a massive illegal immigration onslaught from Mexico that will save our economy!
Jan Brewer is just hell bent on destroying what is left of our economy!
There is just WAAAY too much "legalism" going on for our own good!
LOL. Remember this, people. Its one of the few times when a Lib paper moans about how regulations burden businesses.
This a euphemism for people fleeing the economic disaster that is California. The influx of refugees with money displaces those who lack money and skills and causes the economy to adjust.
Very smelly, septic Bull Obama.
Barney Frank baby ruth level very smelly septic Bull Obama.
(I do apologize for that last, gross, thought. Return to your regular duties now.)
No kidding, huh?
bullshit, the economy in AZ is dependent on construction and tourism, both of those industries are in the doldrums for other reasons than a lack of illegal aliens
The “economic recovery” that is being stymied in AZ is generally hitting the businesses that cater to the illegals. I stopped by a large Big Lots store yesterday to find that it is closing its doors. Many of the specialty stores are already closed.
It couldn’t be that this is the worst economy since the Great Depression?
This article rates a Barfcon 5 nuclear hurl alert!
” Unauthorized immigrants? That’s a new one. “
The best one I ever saw was “ entrants “
Pure nonsense. Yes, some businesses that cater to unauthorized consumers have closed, but to the extent Arizona is still in the doldrums worry over Obama’s next takeaway is the main reason.
