Whole Foods Celebrates, Monetizes Ramadan
fastcompany.com ^ | 8/1/11

Posted on 08/01/2011 1:29:19 PM PDT by Nachum

Thanks to a new social media-centered marketing campaign, Whole Foods will become the first national retail chain to celebrate Ramadan.

Whole Foods has become the first prominent supermarket chain to run a Ramadan marketing campaign--and they're hoping Muslim customers will return the favor as they break fast. Even though Muslims traditionally forego meals during the day, lavish evening Ramadan meals could mean big bucks for the natural foods giant ... as well as brand loyalty from a demographic not traditionally courted by megastore advertising.

Whole Foods is teaming up with Halal frozen entree brand Saffron Road (who sell a variety of Indian-, Thai-, and Moroccan-flavored dinners) to host several promoted blog items on Whole Foods' website along with sponsored giveaways of Saffron Road food and supermarket gift certificates. Additional content for the campaign is being added by Yvonne Maffei of the My Halal Kitchen blog. While it is a relatively small promotion, it also marks a new benchmark for the Muslim-American community: the first coordinated Ramadan promotion by a national supermarket chain.

No in-store promotions for the campaign are planned, instead, in an apparent attempt to test the waters, the promotion will start online. The "campaign focuses on reaching Muslim consumers online where they are already having conversations about halal foods, grocery shopping, and preparing for Ramadan,” Saffron Road spokesperson Lisa Mabe tells Fast Company. Saffron Road maintains a heavy social media presence and an ongoing charitable relationship with Whole Foods' Whole Planet foundation, and hopes the promotion will further strengthen their brand awareness.

That’s too bad. I was hoping for a life-size standee of Mo-Ham-Ed advertising frozen goat’s ass, or whatever they eat.

"Will not be shopping at Whole Foods now."

I went in once. It was full of old hippies. lots of flip flops, long dirty hair.
The food looked gross.
I left and went to Piggly Wiggly and had fried catfish.
Never went back. . . . . . or ever plan to.

If Whole Foods really wants to give mussies a taste of home they should sell filthy goat carcasses covered in flys & chicken eggs covered in poop and feathers kept at room temp.

Lets don’t leave out Costco. They announced recently that their lamb is now all halal. We went in there several weeks ago and went up to the meat counter and talked to the guy behind the window. We asked him if all the lamb is halal or just some of it. ALL OF IT IS HALAL. Its just unbelievable. We will never buy lamb there again. So if you are a Christian don’t eat the lamb from Costco. They will probably try to tell you Kosher is the same process which is basically true except that the Kosher slaughter is just to make sure the blood all gets drained out of the meat. Halal is a sacrifice to Allah. In other words a sacrifice to Idols.

Just spreading the word.

Heh. Fair enough. Perhaps we should have the government step in...no pandering during ramadan, Passover nor Christmas. Heck, maybe the shouldn't sell seafood either, dirty Japs and Chinese. And don't get me started about those damn vegetarian Buddhists!

Christmas? Is that sometime near Holiday?

I still laugh at the "Holidays" coke bottle which said "Happy Holidays" in English, but "Feliz Navidad" in Spanish. I guess they weren't terrified to say Merry Christmas to foreigners.

Absolutely.

Apparently people think it’s okay to bitch about this but get their selfsame panties in a wad over stores refusing to say “Merry Christmas”, for example.

Good for Whole Foods—the more money they make the more jobs they create the more money their employees have to spend the more taxes are paid and so on and so forth....

Viva capitalism!!

I don’t view it as lunacy, I’m just pissed off that the muzzies attacked us on 9/11 and ever since then we’ve had American people and companies bending over backward to show sensitivity toward them, while they - as a culture - have shown no sensitivity to us for what their people did to ours.

Any company that caters to muzzie culture deserves whatever scorn we cab heap upon them. The muzzie culture is not compatible with our culture. Whore Foods Market can suck it!

Then don't shop there. In the old days you had to go to a Kosher butcher or a halal butcher. That a national chain can pull this off is frankly amazing. When they put out their Christmas marketing campaign......ignore it. See, wasn't that easy?

Can’t stand WF and the dirty and sickly looking tree huggers who you see going in. YMMV but that’s what frequents the one around here. I admit to buying two things from them only because after months of hunting in other stores I couldn’t find any - gallon jugs of real maple syrup and unsweetened coconut many, many years ago.

If the meat hasn't been tampered with and tastes the same, then I -- for the life of me -- can't see why it matters what mumbo-jumbo was spoken over it. It just does not affect me and it does not affect you. Why are you giving it supernatural powers?

Now, don't get me wrong, I think Islam is a vicious religion, but this hubbub over halal food seems a bit overwrought. It only means that the food you and I always eat also meets the requirements of Muslims.

As far as the Whole Foods campaign, I'm hard put to decide whether I'd rather go into one of their stores and run into Muslims or old hippies. I'm leaning former.
