Roll Call "Political Wire" editor Taegan Goddard selected a drawing by liberal Arizona Daily Star political cartoonist David Fitzsimmons for his August 1 "Cartoon of the Day." The cartoon (embedded after the page break) depicts a battle-scarred U.S. Capitol and White House in 1942 outside of which Nazi and Japanese Empire flags fly in lieu of the Stars and Stripes. A speech balloon coming from the Capitol dome reads, "At least we didn't go into debt," while the caption reads "If Congress had passed the Tea Party's Balanced Budget Amendment in 1940."

That’s rich given that most of the cuts they’re going to make will come from the defense department.
We aren’t exactly at war with two global superpowers at the moment.
This straw man is worthy of an 0bama speech.
Sorry! That needs to be said louder!
BTW - America's initial wartime production surge was funded by foreign investments form England, France, Belgium, and Holland. All these nations knew they need war material and had no way to produce it internally. The war purchases were backed by large amount of foreign gold bullion transferred to the US to keep it safe from the Nazis.
Final point - there is a heck of a lot of difference between the threat posed by internal wealth consumers and that posed by a foreign military power.
This time the enemy is debt and fiscal solvency, not Nazis.
Fitzsimmons loses because of Godwin’s law.
The left has no shame.
That will be the Political Cartoon of the Year.
Like the old British cartoon that showed the Israeli PM eating a Palestinian baby. The UK press celebrated it as cartoon of the year. The UK standards board said it was not antisemitic because it was too close to the truth.
In reading history it seemed both parties were united behind Roosevelt (well except for one) - big difference than the children in office now.
progressives == crack addicts buying their crack with money from stolen wallets
TEA party == victims of muggings
if the victims were to complain that their wallets were stolen under threat of violence... the media would report that they were trying to starve the unfortunate crack heads and acting like nazis for daring to suggest the crack heads shouldn’t be allowed to continue their criminal ways.
Eighty years ago the left had not developed their culture of irrational hate, envy, entitlement and intimidation to the degree they have acheived today.
Plus - with Roosevelt, being a socialist and a democrat, the brain-crazy leftists were happy with the status quo.
Republicans did the best they could for the country and their own families than quietly cursed Roosevelt the socialist in the privacy of their own homes.
Once war began to engulf the world people naturally rallied around the president, regardless of party.
Grandad’s Democrat party is not your dad’s Democrat party. They’re in name only. My great grandad does go off on a tirade when asked about Roosevelt. It’s always funny to hear.
war-time exigency makes debt a short-term necessity. What’s comparison is the author trying to make? Oh, that’s right. The War on Poverty still rages. Is Oceania winning?
