Publicity from fatal fight affecting officers' morale

The death of a homeless man fatally injured during a fight with Fullerton police has captured the attention of the community and affected morale in the department.

Kelly Thomas, 37, who was schizophrenic, died July 10, five days after the confrontation with six police officers at the Fullerton Transportation Center.

Fullerton police Sgt. Andrew Goodrich said the department has received hundreds of phone calls and e-mails from across California and hundreds turned out to protest Saturday morning at the Fullerton police station.

"It's not pleasant to see people in front of the police station calling the officers 'murderers,'" Goodrich said.

"We understand the community is outraged and concerned and what we've said all along is the incident happened, but the chief called for an outside agency to do a transparent investigation of what happened that night," Goodrich said.

You just compared a mentally ill homeless man who was beaten to death to Hitler!? You disgust me.

"And the police knew the man was schizophrenic how? Isn’t hindsight grand?

If you can excuse this torture and murder, you must be in the police fraternity.

“If a CCW uses force to save a civilian in such a situation ,then what?”

You raised a most difficult issue - “Does the armed citizen have the right to use lethal force to prevent serious bodily injury or death if the attacker is in uniform?”

Given that LEO’s wear body armor and that the CCW citizen probably does not, would the citizen not need far more firepower than a handgun?

How many citizens travel with a weapon able to penetrate armor?

Assuming the citizen was fired upon by the LEO’s committing the assumed felony, and the citizen then shot or killed some or all of the felonious LEO’s, what legal ramifications might exist?

Are there any lawyers reading this thread?

Obviously the analogy was beyond you, so you chose to engage in hyperbole. Geez, you sound just like a Dem, those poor homeless, mentally ill bums. Then go argue with the Dems who let them wander out on the streets with impunity to cause problems for the rest of us. Sorry, my sympathy is limited.

Well, all of the libertarians must have lit on this thread. Police state vitriol is at the max. Sorry, I happen to not think of the police (with the exception of the occasional bad egg) as my enemies. A cop lives in my condo building and he goes out of his way to be helpful to others. So many threads, so little time to spew forth venom on our “police state”. Go to Syria if you want to experience a real police state.

Better a “cop hating keyboard commando” than a LEO “fluffer.”

The analog was beyond me, I admit that. Do you approve of what the six officers did to him? There is a vast difference between me being a “Dem” and approving of what should be murder.

They should quit then.

My guess is a number of officers are setting the stage for retiring with disability (and thus a larger pension), citing mental duress. That's the big thing around here these days: a lot of LEO's come down with sudden disabilities...often about six months before they were scheduled to retire in the first place.

My God how the intellectual acuity of FReepers has dropped.

The problem isn't how they treat you when they are trying to "be helpful." It's what they'll do to you if you annoy them.

My father was a cop and he also said if a cop is out of control, the one responsible is his immediate superior...they are the one’s that allow their men to be brutal or harass a citizen, but he was an old time cop. Retired in 1950. lived to be 85. He had men working under him and told me if any of them got out of line with the citizens, they wouldn't last long under him. I believe there are still some good guys out there. But the bad one’s we hear about should all be fired, and lose any pensions they have paid into.....that might put a stop to some of the crappy cops. Hit them in their pocketbook...

A father's living torture ...to be haunted by the knowledge that your son was crying out for you while he was being beaten to death, and you weren't there.

Yep, where was this guy's father? I suppose it's a lesson to parents everywhere - - if your son is a "homeless" psycho, please help him before he ends up dead in the street. Get him committed, put him in the basement or the garage, anything...

He/She would look like a piece of Swiss Cheese. Every cop from miles around would empty out in him/her.

At one time it was safe to consider the police your friend. That is no longer the case.

“What in God’s name is wrong with you?”

Nothing actually. I just happen to want to see all of the reasons for what happened, including the 6 policeman’s point of view, rather than just jump to conclusions willy nilly. Each to their own.
