New Florida law forces cities, counties to repeal local gun laws

Do handguns belong in South Florida's parks and recreation centers and city halls?
They do according to the Florida Legislature.
Under a new law that takes effect Oct. 1, all of the state's cities and counties must repeal local rules limiting gun ownership. Although the state has claimed sole right to regulate firearms since 1987, this year's new law adds fines for local officials who fail to comply, and gives gun owners a right to sue for damages if they believe their rights have been violated.
Though the initial bill suggested a fine of $5 million, the final legislation lowered the amount to $5,000.
The result: Local leaders have begun to comply, cancelling laws that kept guns out of parks and community buildings, and taking down signs warning visitors not to bring firearms to such places.

and that’s a good thing ... I hope more people in more cities and more states can carry ‘consealed’. carrying ‘open’ does not do anything but encourage theft of the weapon itself (and feed someone’s ego). Carrying consealed legally is a great thing, which not only provides security for one but for many since the bad guys don’t know who’s carrying.
I wonder if the other side thinks they’re the good guys?

It's actually a good thing. It prevents local jurisdictions from enacting gun controls that are stricter than what the state has. Up until this point, many local jurisdictions had laws preventing concealed carry in parks or different areas. It's almost impossible to know the local laws in every different jurisdiction that you travel in and you can inadvertently break the law. One example was that one jurisdiction wouldn't let you carry a concealed weapon below the waist. If you were carrying in an ankle holster or thunderwear you were breaking the law.

Indeed. I actually wasn't being sarcastic - just ripping on lefties who use the term "common sense gun laws."
True common sense gun laws are part of what keeps me in Florida.
beyond guns this is a big problem in local laws.
cities pass laws they KNOW they can never enforce as a means of bandaid control. Let the judge sort them out they say.
City attornys are often incompetent, crony appointees, or both. They will pass road laws, gun laws, emmission laws, etc. with the anticipation that Mr. and Mrs. America does not have the money to hire a lawyer to fight city or county hall. (never mind that there are over EIGHT starving law schools in FL)

I'm a little slow this morning. I agree about Florida gun laws. It really simplifies life compared to other states where businesses have the option of posting "no guns" signs and every jurisdiction has their own laws. Maybe someday we'll see a nationwide CCW with common rules.
all those local laws were invalid but left on the books as a form of legal harassment when a cop or commissioner needed them.
The key with this law is the required repeal. This neutralizes the leave it on the books just in case or as a oops law.
Sweet! Colorado has had their similar law for a number of years now and the world hasn’t cracked in half.

So I guess the actual law is of no importance to them till it comes with penalties, then? Welllll....OK, Nancy! Guess it's time to start building in civil and criminal penalties for politicians in bills when they DARE violate people's rights. They said by their actions that that's what they want, so....

I wholeheartedly disagree. Open carrying does NOT, in and of itself, encourage theft of the weapon; I usually carry openly and have never had someone touch my weapon who I did not give permission to do so while doing so.

Again, I disagree; while I was deployed in Iraq (and all of us US Army & Marines were required to have a weapon at all times) there were no out-of-control egos that were not already predisposed to BE out of control (certain sergeants and officers spring to mind).
