Palin: House passage of debt deal is a victory for the Tea Party
Hot Air ^ | August 2,2011 | Tina Korbe

It seems to be the new talking point: The deal is a victory for conservatives not because of what it does (which is, not much!), but because it supposedly represents a change in the direction of the debate. Once, Washington discussed what to grow. Now, Washington discusses what to cut. Even former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has echoed the theme — but with qualifications. The Wall Street Journal Washington Wire reports:

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin said Monday’s House vote to lift the debt ceiling was a victory for the tea party, proving that conservative activists had shifted the conversation in Washington.

“We shall take this victory and make sure our politicians in office today are learning from this victory,” Ms. Palin said Monday night on Fox News, where she is a paid contributor. “It’s not a 100% pure genuine victory. We just handed the most liberal president, I believe, in U.S. history a $2.4 billion debt increase.” …

Ms. Palin didn’t fully embrace the deal, saying she had plenty of problems with the compromise between the White House and congressional leaders, including Republican House Speaker John Boehner. In the past, the former governor said she was not convinced America would face a default if lawmakers did not raise the debt ceiling by Aug. 2.

Meanwhile, Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), one of the founders of the Tea Party Caucus in Congress (along with GOP presidential candidate Rep. Michele Bachmann), says the deal can’t possibly be touted as a win.

“The Tea Party is not calling this a victory,” Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) said today on Fox News. “I’m certainly not.”

Just a side note, but Bachmann has been claiming sole credit for founding the Tea Party Caucus. But moving on, if this is a failure of the Tea Party, then by extension it is a failure of the Tea Party Caucus. In short Mrs. Bachmann failed.

Or will those trashing the deal now embrace it?

"What's up", like the author of this article is misconstruing her words and the interview. If you hear the interview, it was Greta that said it would be seen as a "victory". Palin very clearly said it was a victory only in that the TEA party changed the debate and nothing more. She also dissed some of the details saying she was disgusted (my word) with us giving Obama more to spend, etc.

"What's up", you are being disingenuous here, I cut you some slack last night, and now you come on with the same slander.

We just allowed the two houses of Congress to completely subvert the Constitution and form a Super Committee to basically overthrow the power of the individual Congressman.

I am making a serious statement here when I say I’m shocked that Sarah Palin is not screaming bloody murder. Not to mention all of the Tea Party reps. Where is the outrage?

She didn't, listen to the interview yourself instead of this author.

that is just poor logic

Will Palin now become persona non grata at FR?

I love Sarah Palin but this cult of personality has built up around her such that people project their views onto her. The bottom line is that she is not some 100% Conservative hero. She is a decent conservative with some moderate tendencies. Look at her record as governor of Alaska. Look at her statements before she was nominated to the GOP ticket. There is a reason she and Perry get along so well. They are both moderately conservative. I always think its funny when the same people who scream that Perry is an evil RINO worship the ground Palin walks on. Having said all that, I still like her and this doesn't change my opinion of her. But I probably had a more realistic view of her than some of her supporters.

I’m glad ot see you see the benefits of this; second, you can’t have it all in anything and frankly we got something out of this. Something was hammered out and then in 2012 Obama will be wiped out and then we will be all set, no? I’m for one glad that we got what we got. Everyone now has faced taht we have a horrific level of debt and everyone in the US is fired up to do something about it. We have fully faced as a nation that we have a problem that can no longer be ignored. Like alcoholics, we are at long last facing our problems, facing that WE are the source of them and no one else.

I did not see the interview live so I just went back and watched it on Youtube. She did say that but taken alone it sounds bad. If you go and watch the whole interview you will see she thinks it’s a bad deal just as we do and only thinks the tea party was a winner because they changed the whole debate. Nice try though.

It’s a thousand times worse. 2.4 trillion.

Normally, debt limits are simply raised. This time there are fiscal restraints attached. Which would you prefer? Because the debt limit was going to be raised regardless.

I keep saying we are an election away from being able to accomplish what we want to do. Let's get crackin'.

This is as much of a victory we can hope for in 2011. The GOP controls one half of one branch of government. Now, in 2012 and 2013 on the other hand, we can hope for much more.

Amen

It gives the Tea Party something to run on in 2012. It gives solid footing for those that want to primary out the RINOs.

Think of the possible "sound bites"........

Yup. More conservative than Bush, Romney or Pawlenty. Less than De Mint, Bachmann or Cain.
