Matt Damon on debt limit: 'I'm so disgusted,' 'it's criminal' wealthy are not paying higher taxes

Academy award-winning actor Matt Damon said he is "so disgusted" with what's happening in Washington over the debt limit, claiming that the Tea Party is "willing to drive it all off a cliff" and adding that it's "criminal" the wealthy are not paying higher taxes.

"I'm so disgusted man. I mean, no, I don't know what you do in the face of that kind of intransigence. You know, so my heart does go out to the President. He is dealing with a lot," Damon said in an exclusive interview at the "Save Our Schools March" in Washington, D.C. on Saturday.

When asked if he agrees with President Obama's call for a "balanced approach" as part of a deal to raise the debt limit, Damon said, "Yes, the wealthy are paying less than they've paid in any time else, certainly in my lifetime."

He continued, "It's criminal that like, you know, so little is asked of people who are getting so much, I mean, I don't mind paying more. I really don't mind paying more taxes. I'd rather pay for taxes than cut like 'Reading is Fundamental' or 'Head Start' or some of these programs that are really helping kids. I mean, why not? This is the greatest country in the world. Is it that much worse if you pay 6 percent more in taxes? Give me a break. You know, look at what you get for it. You get to be American."

Damon did not say the highest percentage he would be willing to pay in taxes but argued for tax reform.

"I mean, why not raise it per million bucks? Right? And then cap it somewhere," he said.

Damon also said those making over $250,000 per year are not job creators.

"Nobody went and started a business with their Bush tax cut. You know, I don't know who would believe something – that just defies common sense so no, that's – no. I was against those tax cuts. I thought they were ridiculous. So little is asked of the upper class anyway, you know. I mean, what percent of them or their kids are fighting in any of these wars?" he said.

Damon also called the Tea Party "completely intransigent" in terms of the debt ceiling debate.

"It's true. They are absolutely willing to drive it all off a cliff. They mean what they say, that's for sure," he said.

What does he think is the income level of the small business owners, the people who run the dry cleaners, the restaurants, the auto repair shops?

The only thing he knows is that he pulls in $24 million per year. Ask him how many jobs his production company (LivePlanet) created and I'm sure he'll talk out of the other side of his mouth.

it's "criminal" the wealthy are not paying higher taxes.

The feelings of some libtards who want to punish the rich is no justification for using force to violate the rights of others.

Well....Well...Well....what do we have here?

Senate cuts movie-industry tax break from stimulus bill

Note who is for the tax breaks, and who isn't.

Why not just raise Hollywood tax rate to 95%? How fast would they leave the town?

California is nowhere near that, and yet look at how fast companies move their production facilities to Canada.

CANADA!!!

“Damon has had some sort of Marxist brainwashing treatment applied. Sort of like in the movie.”

That would be a great script for a movie spoof about him. How come there isn't a conservative Saturday Night Live type of show with skits like that? It would be great.

This is precisely why we need a liberal advocacy income surtax. Those who vote to subject their fellow citizens to higher taxes should be assessed an additional 50% levy on top of the rate they currently pay. If you want to vote for liberal Dems, your taxes go up. It could be an assessment made right at the ballot box. Certainly, the technology now exists.

Who could possibly oppose this, as a matter of public policy? Certainly not Matt Damon or Barack Obama. It would be the ultimate in participatory democracy...a form of eco-political "card check," if you will.

Unless, of course, Matt Damon and Barack Obama are lying about their own personal willingness to pay higher taxes. ;-)

""Yes, the wealthy are paying less than they've paid in any time else, certainly in my lifetime."

And what on earth is preventing these zillionares to NOT write off anything so that they may contribute more to their "loving gubmit"?

NOTHING!!! They want us middle class to give ALL, but yet allow themselves to give nothing!

We should reverse the tax code to where the richest pay the least tax and the poorest pay the most!

The rick don’t use the tax funds and the poor consume the most of the tax funds so tax the shit out of them!

They don’t want to punish the rich as much as they have this intense need to justify their own existance on this planet by ADVOCATING helping others without actually DOING anything themselves.

Not paying enough Matt? Then donate more of your $$$$ to the government or shut up.

And tell your Hollywood pals to stop going to the government and asking for tax breaks.

A small to medium hvac /construction/plumbing <———pick one company makes a million a year. They would love to get bigger but all the government taxes, vice grips and regs stop them.

If he wants to give up his money, let him. No reason to make others do the same at the point of a gun. Also, we already have the most progressive tax system among the OECD http://www.taxfoundation.org/blog/show/27134.html

Not yet, however I have no doubt that it will be soon along with the MC and the poor.
