Federal officials investigate (six golden) eagle deaths at DWP wind farm

Federal authorities are investigating the deaths of at least six golden eagles at the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power's Pine Tree Wind Project in the Tehachapi Mountains, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said Tuesday.

So far, no wind-energy company has been prosecuted by federal wildlife authorities in connection with the death of birds protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. A prosecution in the Pine Tree case could cause some rethinking and redesigning of this booming alternative energy source. Facilities elsewhere also have been under scrutiny, according to a federal official familiar with the investigations.

"Wind farms have been killing birds for decades and law enforcement has done nothing about it, so this investigation is long overdue," said Shawn Smallwood, an expert on raptor ecology and wind farms. "It's going to ruffle wind industry feathers across the country."

Wildlife Service spokeswoman Lois Grunwald declined to comment on what she described as "an ongoing law enforcement investigation regarding Pine Tree."

Joe Ramallo, a DWP spokesman, said, "We are very concerned about golden eagle mortalities that have occurred at Pine Tree. We have been working cooperatively and collaboratively with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the California Department of Fish and Game to investigate these incidents.

It’s good to see some good news for a change. Not that I’m glad the eagles died (I don’t really care) I’m just glad wind machines killed them.

Costeau tested a vertical stack on a boat instead of sails. The stack had a turbine in it and took advantage of the wind from any direction. These instead of windmills would seem to be the way to go.

On I-40 between OKC and Texas there are so many of them. The whole landscape is ruined. Where you once had peaceful farm land, you have thousands of hideous machines. I don’t know if anyone is getting any energy from them, I’m not.

Don’t land owners get paid pretty good for parking one of those hunks of junk on their property?

Don’t only shut it down for the birds. The workers have sore elbows.

They do work...on cutting up eagles.

And for producing tiny amounts of electricity at high expense.

I live out in the beautful countryside, and a neighbor down the road installed a smaller one in his yard. I asked him if he's seeing a reduction in his electric bill, and he said he won't know for a few years.

???

Feral cat populations will increase, causing a greater incidence of Toxoplasma gondii transmitted to hmans, causing more mental illness and therfore more liberals. See how it works?

LOL! So THAT'S how it happens.

This is pure genius. You should apply for research funds immediately before Obama gives out all the money he has been saving for the election! I don’t even think they know what they are funding anymore.

Windmills are a failure.
Mercury lightbulbs are a failure.
Chevy Volts are a failure.
Ethanol is a failure.

Don’t forget the spotted owls that are getting eaten by barred owls faster than they can reproduce. There was a proposal to spend one million taxdollars killing barred owls to save the spotted owl. Seriously, look it up yourself. Perhaps we should place the windfarms where the barred owls are found?

Sigh.... it’s great that we are turning over more and more of our economy to folks with such a great record of success.
