Polygamist Warren Jeffs Guilty of Child Rape
ABC News ^ | August 4, 2011 | Clayton Sandell

Posted on 08/04/2011 3:17:23 PM PDT by jazusamo

A jury has found polygamist religious leader Warren Jeffs guilty of child rape.

Jeffs, the leader of a radical polygamist sect of Mormonism known as the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints (FLDS), was found guilty of forcing two teenage girls into "spiritual marriage," and fathering a child with one of them when she was 15. The charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Jeffs, who acted as his own lawyer, called only one witness in his defense. The witness was a fellow member of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints who, at Jeffs' direction, read at length from the Book of Mormon. During the trial, Jeffs frequently interrupted testimony.

He ended the trial in silence earlier today, standing mute for nearly half an hour during the time designated for his closing argument.

Every five minutes, District Court Judge Barbara Walther would remind Jeffs of the time. Spectators in the gallery exchanged smiles and odd glances. One security officer did his best to stifle a yawn.

Finally, at the conclusion of the 25 minutes allotted to Jeffs for his summation, Jeffs turned toward the jury with a slight smile and said quietly, "I am at peace."

No, but you never know with some juries now, hopefully the judge will sentence him to the max.

This guy is a nutjob, but then I guess I already knew that. Prison life should be fun for him. Maybe he'll be someone’s involuntary “bride.”

polygamist religious leader Warren Jeffs

Calling Jeffs a religious leader is like calling Mohammed a religious leader.

Both were paedophiles and only that.

But if he’d been a 45-year-old woman and the “spouses” were teenage boys, it would be “not guilty” from here to Sunday.

As a Christian, what disturbs me as much as the child rape, which is horrible enough, is the 'spiritual'/'religious' mumbo-jumbo this creep used on his young female victims. According to the ABC report, Jeffs closed his sex session with the girls by saying a prayer thanking God for their innocence. The innocence he just stole. How sick is that?

I know this monster will be judged by God (as we all will) but its encouraging to learn that, this time, human justice was correct. As for Jeffs, he may claim to be 'at peace' but I doubt this pedophile will feel 'peaceful' for long in prison for the rest of his life. 'Warren, meet Bubba. Your new husband'.

For many years some of the men have been targeted to attempt to put a stop to this. The women have been left alone because they are seen as victims. When the woman is the one being raped she is a victim, but when she is allowing/assisting in the rape of her daughter or any other girl she is part of the problem and needs to be charged.

Having lived in San Angelo, TX more than 3 decades, and still being in touch with the nature of that community, I assure one and all...there has never been any doubt about this outcome. Not a shred or a scintilla of one...

Romney can’t totally disclaim this, the origins of his Mormon faith was reeking in adult men taking child brides, just like Jeffs......perhaps that changed over the years, but that is still part of the history of all Mormons. I hope this means more and more of them leave those cults and get themselves free.

He should have attempted a change of venue to New York or other same-sex marriage jurisdiction to make a claim of equivalency.

Probably would have been found not guilty.

I know you’re right and people with any common sense at all know it also.

I guess I’ve become cynical about justice with some of these trials. I didn’t follow the Anthony trial closely at all but I did follow the Simpson trial closely and both should have been slam dunks. Still, we have the finest justice system in the world.

The sick dynamics of the FLDS is a mirror image of Islamic families; Extra unwanted males dumped on societies, pedophelia, wife and child beating, marrying cousins, male dominance, inbreeding/genetic deformities, poverty, insular tribal fear & hatred of outsiders and predilection to cheat outsiders.

The justice system breaks down in certain situations.

This wouldn’t be one of them.

The community of San Angelo, including citizens and the judicial system especially the judges, would not be part of that problem.

Remember the Houston woman who drowned her 5 children? I do not believe a San Angelo trial would have found her not guilty by reason of insanity, as a Houston one did.

Hooray! At least he can never personally rape a child again. This man is a very disturbed individual who used God to carry out sexually deviant behavior with children. It’s frightening to think this man led a large group of blind followers. It’s a shame a new “prophet” will be appointed, and this will likely continue.

His grandfather and a band of co-religionists fled to Mexico in the late 19th Century in order to continue their polygamous ways.

Willard’s daddy, George, was born in Chihuahua as a result and thus found himself in an eligibilty controversy before the ‘68 election.

The Vietnam “brainwashing” story ended Romney’s hopes and that was that.

Islam and this sect have a lot in common.
Nasty old men who want all the sex they can get- especially under age young girls, want to keep women under their thumbs and make them third class citizens, leech off the govmt. per welfare, etc and use their religion and God to sanction their perversions.
