EDITORIAL: Lemonade tyranny
The Washington Times ^ | August 5, 2011 | The Washington Times

Neighborhood lemonade stands have for generations served as a training ground for budding young capitalists. Boys and girls eager for their first taste of success have recently watched their dreams dissolve as rulebook-toting authoritarians demand little Timmy and Sally show their permits and papers or face the wrath of the state. Americans are fed up with this nonsense. It’s time for a little lemonade liberation.

On Aug. 20, over a hundred people have so far pledged to gather on the Capitol’s west lawn to protest the petty bureaucracy that thinks threatening children with fines is a proper use of taxpayer resources. The organizers promise that they are ready to go to jail for the ultimate act of civil disobedience: offering a refreshing cup of lemonade on a sultry afternoon on the nation’s front lawn for 10 cents.

Close to 2,000 have signed up on Facebook for nationwide pro-lemonade events after a father of two set up a page advertising “Lemonade Liberation Day.” Organizer Robert Fernandes expected just a few of his friends would be interested, but in just a week his lemonadefreedom.com website has attracted far more attention than he expected. “I basically just put it out there and it took off,” the father of two told The Washington Times. “To me, something as simple as a lemonade stand is an important thing for a young child. It teaches them a really big lesson in life - setting goals and seeing a project through.”

This is exactly what one would expect from a government that has way, way too much money.

The thing is, most of this tyranny is by the local governments. People need to stop voting for local officials simply because he’s a decent guy from town. Where do they stand on individual rights?

My 6yo granddaughter sold rocks to earn money to go to the county fair. It was so darn cute!
She caught a rabbit in the rabbit scramble!

A lemonade stand was one of my first business ventures. My last one was when my mother charged me for the actual costs.

As we saw in Milwaukee, many cops would rather hassle little girls selling lemonade than get invovled in stopping violence by groups of “youths.”

I have come to believe, extreme as it may sound, that on some level liberals just hate kids.

How else do you explain the obsession with establishing sex education in grade school, fining kids selling lemonade in their front yard, allowing union goons to molest them at airports and forcing apple slices into Happy Meals and toys out of them? I think it is a desire to mar the joyful innocence of childhood...liberals can’t stand to see anyone free or happy!

I sure hope they don’t go after Susie with her lemonade stands. That commercial showed all of us how to go after the American dream. I’m sure a lot of kids went into setting up a lemonaide stand just like Susie’s.

How much of this is just lack of common sense or fear of lawsuits I wonder.

I wonder what the authorities would do to a kid today who sold baby frogs and toads at a roadside stand like I did back in the late 1950s? Made some fairly decent cash too.

Did you get a government permit for that garage sale, Komrade?

Watch out, EBay.

Obviously Jimmy Carter’s daughter Amy should never have been allowed to sell her lemonade to the press in 1976.

You shouldn’t have to get a permit unless you’re an adult. Leave the kids out of it.

That’s because the little girls don’t shoot back !

I had the same experience with Washington State Fish and Wildlife when an American Indian set a net completely across a river exit into Lake Washington so he could catch 100% of spawning salmon.
I reported it o them when the Indian fisherman flashed a shotgun at me from his aluminum gillnetter boat (fishing in their “old and traditional fishing grounds”) when I tried to cross his net as I was heading upriver to go home in my boat.

The Washington State bureaucrat told me, “We’re kind of afraid of those Indians. We’ll mention it at our next meeting with them next month.”

Useless gummint.....
goes for the easy kill every time !

##

It would still be allowed FOR HER. The laws and rules don’t apply to the ruling political class

Years ago my youngest wanted to go to a church camp. I asked him how bad he wanted to go, it was expensive, and he opened a lemonade stand to help raise money. Sure I bought the supplies but he did the selling. He went to camp.
