Perry offers praise, prayer but little on politics
Houston Chronicle ^ | August 6, 2011 | Joe Holley

...The nation's longest-serving governor noted that this "loving and personal God desires not a show of religion but a deep connection with our innermost being. … His agenda is not a political agenda. His agenda is a salvation agenda."

God, he said, is wise enough not to be affiliated with any political party.

[Rick] Perry read three passages of Scripture: from Joel 2, Isaiah 40 ("They'll soar on wings like eagles"), and Ephesians 3. He closed his morning remarks with a prayer.

"Father, our heart breaks for America," Perry prayed. "We see discord at home, we see fear in the marketplace, we see anger in the halls of government. And as a nation, we have forgotten who made us, who protects us, who blesses us. And for that we cry out for your forgiveness."

Perry also prayed for President Barack Obama, "that you would impart your wisdom upon him, that you would guard his family."

.......Barry W. Lynn, an ordained United Church of Christ minister and executive director of Citizens United for Separation of Church and State, was inside the stadium. He said he believed Perry was trying to "out-Jesus" Michelle Bachmann and Newt Gingrich, two declared candidates who are making overtures to the religious right.

"Governor Perry achieved his goal today," Lynn said. "He drove almost every major religious right leader and group into his corral......"

........Except for the participation of prominent pastors and politicians - including Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback, who read the Beatitudes - the seven-hour event resembled nothing more than a boisterous Sunday-morning worship service at evangelical churches across the nation. The prayers were long and heartfelt, the remarks earnest, and the music - gospel and Christian rock - inspired rapturous frenzies of arm-waving, swaying and singing along.

It's being reported that beyond the 30,000 who attended in person, more than 1,100 churches signed up to simulcast the event in cities and communities across the country and that people in Indonesia, India and Brazil were among the participants.

The Response is getting a lot of coverage in the media. Drudge has The Response story - top, middle column, with Obama's Hip Hop White House birthday bash story linked underneath.

drove into his corral? Sounds like his Gardasil "round ups"
for Merck and his Chief-of-Staff.

Yes, but isn’t it true that 23 years ago he was a typical Texas Democrat and supported algore?

So, nothing else matters, right?

And I mean..............nothing!

Perry, shown here with [Speaker Gib] Lewis in the background, was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 1984. He came to be known as one of the "Pit Bulls," members who sat in the lower pit of the House Appropriations Committee and bitterly fought spending increases. - PHOTO: The Texas Tribune/Courtesy of Texas State Library and Archives Commission

Barry Lynn?

The hate-filled hero of the anti-religious, religious Left, is some kinda quote worthy to play off of, isn’t he now?

HuffPo would swear by it, though.

“Perry offers praise, prayer but little on politics”

This simply doesn’t jive. Perry IS politics. Just the fact that he was there is politics. Ain’t nothing wrong with praying, but this? At least be honest about it.
It was a super-duper political prayer rally. And anyone who says is wasn’t is lying through their teeth.

Perry, if nominated, will turn the 2012 election into a referendum on Obama’s economic policies... and Obama’s economic results.

Let me translate it for you into plain English:

“I hate Rick Perry.”

All else is indulgent fluff.

The Rick Perry I Know (Perry keeps his boot on his opponent's neck until.....) ....."He is an extremely astute politician with a keen sense of where voters are, and he has great instincts on message. Perry has ruthless discipline and communication. They say in politics, “Don’t let your boot off an opponent’s neck till Election Day.” Perry doesn’t take his boot off till a year after the votes have been counted and the opponent has faded into oblivion.".....

You, and the hate-filled “religious” Left, agree.

You coulda been standing outside with the despicable Barry Lynn and his crew.

If you’re in politics, ya gotta shutup about your Christian beliefs.

Just shut up.

That’s the message.

Hi Rich, how about:

When it comes to OPEN BORDERS by Perry or
the mandate of drugs by Gov. Executive Order (PerryCARE)
take NOTHING for granite.

I wasn’t all that big on this day of praise thing but he’s doing it early, before he declares.

When I was young, I was a democrat. The democratic party has been pushed so far left it is not the same party as when I was young. I have become conservative in my old age and much wiser. Happens to lots of people.

Amazing - why do you detest the man? A politician says he wants to hold a prayer rally, sticks to prayer, and gets trashed for it. Haley Barbour came to a Promise Keepers function in Mississippi and opened the meeting with some prayer and encouragement - never mentioned politics, but I suppose you would think he only allowed the Promise Keepers to meet in his State so he could make use of them.

You are correct.

Michele Bachmann came from a Democrat family. In Minnesota, what would you expect? In Texas, Rick Perry, who is no youngster, dates back to the days when in politics you were a Democrat in order to get anywhere, and you could be anything on the spectrum from left to right to in-between.

BTW, I love Sarah Palin and could proudly support her. Or Michele. Or Herman Cain. Or Rick Perry.

I was a Democrat because my father was a Democrat. I didn’t leave the party, the party left me. Now it is happening with the Republicans and I may change again-—to a third party? If one comes along that I like better-—yes.

Right now I see a Republican party with a lot of Democrats (RINO’s) running it.

This country needs term limits, and we need them bad. Older politicians are more interested in getting re-elected than in what is good for America.

I agree with everything you said, especially about term limits. But it will never happen. I no longer say I am a republican. I am a conservative and pray we will get a conservative nominated.

Your points against RINOS are valid.

The answer is a Republican party made up of fewer and fewer of them.

That’s where we should focus our efforts.

We need a better definition of RINO.

Too many are ready to destroy any potential candidate for one or two errors in judgement at any time in their entire lives.

If they were once a Democrat that automatically makes them a RINO Republican now, in the eyes of too many. No, Reagan was once a Democrat. Michele Bachmann came from a Democrat family and supported Carter when she was a college student.
