Radio ad warns of petition drives (Using fear of identity theft to thwart petition drive)

The radio ad sounds unsettling, warning of the dangers of signing political petitions.

“California doesn’t license or bond signature gatherers. Many of them are from out of state and move from city to city to carry petitions. Anyone can do it, even convicted felons and forgers,” says the ad. “The legislature even called it an identity theft starter kit.”

The tagline says the ad is funded by Californians Against Identity Theft, with no further information. The Watchdog set out to determine who was behind the ad.

The domain for the group’s website is registered to the same address and phone number as the State Building & Construction Trades Council of California, a labor union coalition. The council’s president, Bob Balgenorth, said the identity theft group is separate but he financially supports the effort, helped to organize it, and believes the concern is real.

Labor is running these ads playing on fears of identity theft. Additionally, they are spamming the petitions to throw off the count and cause questions.

This is all occurring as petitions for the City Reform Pension plan are being circulating.

Dirty pool.

Listen to the commercial at the link. I heard it on the radio on my way home this afternoon and my head nearly exploded.

I posted pics to Facebook on Sunday of a black woman and a white male carrying signs that said, "Do you KNOW what you're signing" with fine print babbling about losing qualified police officers. The two were double teaming a single white female sitting outside the exit door at Fry's Electronics in San Diego (Stonecrest). The black female did her best to distract attention away from the petition table. If a customer turned in that direction, the white male would push his sign in their faces to obstruct access to the petition table.
