My point is not to denigrate the hobbits. It’s to point out that they were even more myopically involved with their own affairs than were the other races. With the exception of four extraordinary exceptions, all of whom were more or less dragooned into it.
The Scouring of the Shire involved one minor battle, with several skirmishes elsewhere in the Shire. A few hundred to perhaps a thousand hobbits were all told involved.
We don’t have a census available, but it’s pretty obvious most hobbits weren’t involved in the fighting. Not their fault, no doubt, they just didn’t get the opportunity.
Leaving out the Scouring of the Shire was akin to leaving the showdown out of High Noon.
I believe Jackson stated in an interview that he “didn’t like” that chapter of the book, so he deliberately omitted it.
I propose that directors who despise the message of a book ought decline to direct the adaptation of the book to film.
