Alaska volcano erupting with lava streams from crater (Cleveland Volcano)

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) - A volcano that has been erupting for several days in Alaska's Aleutian Islands may be preparing for a more explosive event, scientists said on Wednesday.

Cleveland Volcano, a 5,676-foot peak located on Chuginadak Island, about 940 miles southwest of Anchorage, has been in low-level eruption since the end of July, the Alaska Volcano Observatory said.

"An eruption for us is any time that magma is coming up from the surface in the ground," said John Power, scientist in charge at the observatory, a joint federal-state operation. "This is very much happening here."

Chuginadak Island is uninhabited and the volcano has not posed an immediate hazard to anyone or affected air traffic, even though it lies directly in the North America-to-Asia flight corridor used by major airlines, Power said.

My son is on a rafting trip in Alaska right now, but it doesn’t sound like this is even big enough or close enough that they would see it. He’s going down the Copper River with his Boy Scout troop.

I was up there for the eruptions of Mt. Redoubt and Mt. Spurr.

I remember the Redoubt event in particular because we lost a soldier in my unit who was traveling back to Anchorage from Ft. Greely in a military vehicle accident.

The volcanic ash was terrible to try to drive in.

Precursor? lots of little fellas in that neck of the woods .. and they do puff occasionally.. the Pacific plate is just adjusting itself.. so far so good.

I’d forgotten how many volcanos were up there.. We have never been caught in the ash , so far.

Sorry to hear of the loss of the soldier.

Last image received at August 10, 2011 11:29:18 AKDT. - Clear day image - Camera is located at AVO's Redoubt Hut, approximately 7.5 mi (12 km) from Redoubt's summit crater. This camera provides a view of the north flank of Redoubt. This camera is in a remote location and operates on battery power. We will set this camera to power on as much as batteries allow. Redoubt summit is approximately 10,200 ft above sea level.

We’re flying to AK on Friday night. Bummer that we will not be able to see the volcano. OTOH, we will not be in the path of the ash, I guess, if we are coming up from LA.

As to the posted pictures— Wow. Do we live on a great planet or what?
