Should Hillary Clinton Challenge Obama in the Primaries?
US News ^ | August 11, 2011 | Paul Bedard

Posted on 08/11/2011 9:08:27 AM PDT by McGruff

With a new poll showing that 32 percent of Democrats are eager for President Obama to be challenged by somebody in his own party, is it time for a Democrat to get into the 2012 primary?

Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders said yes recently, though history frowns on challengers. Just ask the late Edward M. Kennedy who failed to knock off Jimmy Carter in 1980 as the former president faced economic troubles and bad polls similar to what Obama is up against.

Pew was out with a poll analysis yesterday that said "32% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents say they would like other Democrats to take on Obama for the nomination, while 59% say they would not."

Pew said that Obama is actually in a better situation than Bill Clinton was before his re-election. "Far fewer Democrats want to see Obama challenged for the nomination than supported a primary challenge to Bill Clinton in December 1994. At that time, 66% of Democrats and Democratic leaners wanted to see Clinton challenged, shortly after the GOP won control of Congress for the first time in 40 years."

But who would that challenger be and could they win?

Which Democrat could beat President Obama for the 2012 presidential nomination?

A. 90.76% Secretary of State Hillary Clinton
B. 0.0% Former Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean
C. 0.0% Sen. John Kerry
D. 1.68% Former Vice President Al Gore
E. 7.56% Nobody

John Kerry, who served in Viet Nam BTW, loses again.

It would sure piss him off if he lost to Hillary but I don’t think she could win the election. It would be fun fight to watch though.

It’s a deceiving pol.

All the alternatives to Evita are people universally known for cheats, liars and incompetents.

Then Evita as President would be as bad and worse than “O” because she’d BE another “O “ ... but WITH a plan!

I wouldn't trust the independents not to go running after Hillary just like they ran after Obama. Independents don't think a whole lot and when the ads about the GOP wanting to kill grandma come out, they'll get all hopey and changey for Hillary.

If it hadn't been for that little matter of murder in his back ground, he may have done it.

If she ran against him, she wouldn’t win because of the black vote. Plus, she was part of his administration. But it would severely weaken 0baMao in the general.

The loon is doing a superb job of destroying himself and his minions - but Hillary would be much more subtle (a la frog in a slowly boiling pot).

Be afraid. Be very afraid.

That may or may not be true..... Remember that little billy clintoon was also the first....repeat the FIRST....native born, self-declared black president!!! (LOL)

And he'd be a hell of a campaigner for the witch.

One thing's for sure...it would split the dem/lib/prog/pops all to hell!

There would be the group that loves the stain (blacks and other assorted idiots).

There would be the group that thinks the stain is not nearly liberal enough

There would be the group that loves the clintons...billy, hitlery...doesn't matter

There would be the "disaffected" group that won't vote at all just because of the mess.

And there would be the group that is so disappointed, they might even vote for the "right" just cause they're pissed off enough.

We should all vote for Gore. He is so unhinged that he might actually run against Obama. He has enough money of his own to make things interesting. Obama would wipe the floor with the poodle but it would keep the Dems from messing with our primaries and force him to use up some of his billion dollar campaign budget.

OTOH if Hillery gets the nod we would be hard pressed to beat her.

I don’t believe that that’s true. With the Blacks “totally invested” in FUBO, if the RATs change horses for the 2012 election, the Blacks will stay home along with their 12% of the vote, and the Pubbies will coast to victory. So the RATs are stuck with FUBO for better or worse. So, I say go RATS, primary the bastard. Make him spend all of his $billion on staying on as the nominee. We should all hope that there is a primary fight.

That is an excellent article. Thanks for posting. It’s full of little gems, like this (which I was telling a NYer just yesterday)

“Remember — and this is key to understanding all of this — that the Left spent three decades or so in exile, crafting elaborate masturbatory fantasies of what it wanted to do to this country and our economy when it finally took over again. Thirty years in the wilderness makes people go a little mad, so just imagine how nuts many of these bearded Marxists are, since they started out crazy to begin with.

“These are Leftist academics and true-believer cultists who have thus far been largely insulated from the true suffering of most Americans, because they are still being paid by non-profits, universities, grant-sponsored endeavors, labor unions, PACs, or the federal government in some way. There have been no layoffs, no budget cuts, and no threats to their livelihood because the parasitic flow of tax dollars into these people’s pay checks has not been shut off yet…while people who work in the real world, who have been subjected to the real life consequences of the sum total of Obama’s terrible decisions, realize just how bad things really are.”

I would also add DC to that mix - things are just fine in DC. They can’t figure out why everyone all over is so upset about jobs.

Sitting Presidents who face a strong primary challenge from inside their own party generally win the nomination and lose the general election.

Jerry Ford and Ronald Reagan. 1976
Jimmy Carter and Edward Kennedy 1980.

The best of all possible worlds is for Clinton to challenge Obama in the Dem primaries and for Clinton to lose thereby delaying the start of the Dem campaign for President and using up resources that could have been used against a Rep in the general election.

I tend to agree with that, because she has a reasonable intelligence quotient. And I find it hard to believe myself, that I've come to hate Obama to such a degree, that she is starting to look less fearful to me, and a bit closer to pro-American...Or should I say, hates America a bit less.

Don't get me wrong, I hate her guts, I've just come to hate Obama more.

Sitting Presidents who face a strong primary challenge from inside their own party, then withdraw, generally leave the eventual nominee to lose the general election.

Harry Truman and Adlai Stevenson - 1952
Lyndon B. Johnson and Hubert Humphrey - 1968

“IIRC, it was Bobby Kennedy who took LBJ out...until LBJ had him killed.”

I’m really hoping you were joking, but since it happened over 40 years ago, and since you really may not remember correctly, and there may be younger readers on the forum:

1. It was Eugene McCarthy who took LBJ out.
2. It was Sirhan Sirhan who killed Bobby Kennedy on the anniversary of the six-day war because of Kennedy’s support for Israel including a promise to replenish thier arsenal with 50 Phantom fighter jets if elected.

Not to be to picky here, but my recollection was that RFK's strong showing in the primaries was what led LBJ to not seek the nomination for president. It was LBJ who put his influence behind Humphrey who won the nomination and ran against Nixon in 1968. McCarthy lost the nomination after he cried at some event.

If she challenges Obama she’d lose because she’d anger a lot of blacks.

Her only hope would be for Obama to step aside for __fill_in_the_blank___reasons and to endorse Hillary on his way out the door.

Well....that's a lose/win for all of us. Lose because she'd get any votes at all....and win because little billy clintoon heading off to his next "out of this world" destination surely reduces spend (no need for retirement salary or secret service coverage).
