In an Austin interview with Mark Halperin, Rick Perry says he has decided he wants to be president, talks about the advice he got from George W. Bush, and says he would compete against Barack Obama in California.

I’d vote for Perry or Romney - my two top choices with all the rest, including those not running, not able to win.
You may notice that Perry did not say he had a reasonable chance to win California or that he would spend a dime in California.
He just has to tell California how much they’re business climate sucks vs. Texas and he’ll have an audiance.

California will be in such terrible economic shape by the time of next year’s election, that almost any of the current candidates vying for the Republican nomination will be competitive.
All politics is local, and that locality will be hurting big time.

he would not be my first choice but if he is the GOP choice I will work very hard for him.
There is no 1005 idlea candidate that will appeal to everyone but Perry will come across as pretty attractive to many.

Yep, if they got any closer, why George W. Bush and his father may have considered actually endorsing him in the general election against a democrat....I'm sure they though about it, I'm sure they came real close, maybe just by a hair to doing it........who knows, now that they are buddies, maybe they can actually get over the hump and endorse him.....
I actually thought it was odd that Poppy Bush endorsed Perrys primary opponent, but when the general election came around and Perry was facing a democrat, he suddenly was AWOL.

The idea that he couldn't be tarred with being a second W, from the right or the left has been debunked now.
The tensions between Bush and Perry are well documented, but I think Perry has tried to bury the hatchet. He doesn't want the Bush clan actively opposing him, though I doubt if any will endorse him in the primaries. There is no contradiction.

The contradiction is in how it’s been presented by the Perry supporters in defending him from those who see him as GWBII. There may have been disagreement, but clearly from this interview they are close personally, and I’d say that’s not particularly comforting to me that he is close with Rove & Co..

I think Perry has a better chance of winning than Romney. I would love to see Perry and Bachman on the ticket with Palin running for the Kyl’s seat in AZ.
I have fought posters tooth and nail to explain that it is Karl Rove and his tactics against Perry and his team (including Carney) who have been at odds.
This continued with Rove and the "Bush team" working with Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison to defeat Perry in the 2010 election so she would return to Texas and the Governor's seat. AND it appears that this faction (from what is discernible in the media) is backing Romney. I did not put this on a Bush vs Perry footing.
I've also had to dispel this Bush II stuff -- The Bushes are from money and elite schools; Perry is hardscrabble, an Aggie and has worked his butt off to achieve his goals.
