In an Austin interview with Mark Halperin, Rick Perry says he has decided he wants to be president, talks about the advice he got from George W. Bush, and says he would compete against Barack Obama in California.

At least set the framework by educating the leftists or the dumb ones what is really at stake. If they choose the Leftist loser ways again then so be it. Ca will re-elect Obama unless it turns into North Korea and then it becomes a battleground state.

I’m not anti-Perry, but this is the second time I have to admit to second thoughts on an issue with him. I really don’t want someone who is comfortable with the present GOP establishment. I’d rather have someone who makes the GOP elite kick and scream while forcing them to join his position, much like Reagan did.

First, you have to campaign nation wide, even in places where you might not win. It's military common sense that "he who can't skin holds a leg." Grant understood that, and so did Ike.

Second, I'm still not convinced CA is gone. Yep, you cite Fiorina and Whitman, but neither of those were as conservative as Perry. I think that if you even have a shot in CA, quite the opposite from the "conventional wisdom," you have to offer a CLEAR choice and that a more conservative candidate would do better than a moderate. DJ, what do you know about Bush 04 vs. McCain 08---again, with caveats that they weren't entirely similar races?

The change approved by Brown will occur only if it is adopted by states with a majority of the electoral votes in the country. California is the eighth state to approve the new system.

so for now nothing changes and won’t change in near future. Texas and Florida will not likely agree. NY will. Pa and Ohio? who knows

I thought what had happened was like in some state that voted to split electoral votes based on % each candidate gets

That's a pretty silly post, of course I do, but not by the Rove/Bush "reach across the aisle" wing of the GOP. Their record on spending is no more sustainable than Obama's and helped get us into our downgrade.

I prefer someone who would actually cut something rather than pretend to do so.

I've done it for the first time twice today on two different threads, pointing out an incorrect talking point of the pro-Perry crowd (you included) who has tried to sell us that there is a rift between Bush/Rove and Perry, a talking point that is destroyed by the very interview you just posted.

I've never said an anti-Perry thing on FR until today (all I said is this new information gives me pause), actually having bought the rift info you and others have given. All I did was point out the obvious from this interview, that this info you've given is not true; methinks you're being a bit thin skinned here, you just can't handle that the relationship between the two camps is close, born out by the interview you posted.

Texans had been democrats since the days of Reconstruction, and it was only when the democrat party became socialist liberal idiots that conservative Texans switched to the Republican Party. Perry & GWB never really saw eye to eye -- that goes back many years and is incontrovertible.

But this is politics, so they've made nice.

Heck, Reagon & GHWB were not exactly chummy and Reagan picked him as running mate. Maybe not the wisest move in the long run, but it makes sense in politics to bury the hatchet, one way or the other.
