Ya know, that's an awfully interesting thought.
We know the US could never get away with it during a conservative or even moderate administration. But with this crowd, they could easily pull off a massive strike and not be seriously called onto the carpet for it.
Wonder if we could find a stealth conservative, get him elected as a left-wing loon, bomb the stuffing out of our enemies, and call it a day. Nah, the New York Times would blab and give away the secret.

I mostly agree with you. But this an enemy like no other. He engages in terrorism as his weapon of choice. I think we should carpet bomb them, kill their leaders, drop bibles over them, and leave.

What a waste. For what? This is just part of the price that we all pay as Americans for having people who hate America running America.
This brave young man's sense of duty and supreme sacrifice has been reduced to, using Edmund Burke's phrase in a related context, "an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle".
Yup. Osama’s dead and ‘nation building’ for Afgn is a waste of time. Most of the strikes on the Taliban are with predators which could be operated out of Khazakstan.
I disagree. The very willingness of Americans to go to the ends of the earth and fight and die for their country is part of what keeps us secure. We are safer because there is nowhere so remote that our enemies can hide and feel safe.
But that is a far cry from the current state of mission-creep there, where it got changed to the usual bit of 'nation building', a lost cause. That's 'dying for your country', but to what end?
Too many of our service personnel have been killed or wounded since then attempting the impossible. And now we are at the point to where the 'brightest and the best' in Washington are admitting it, we're pulling out, Afghanistan will revert back to its natural condition as a failed state, and all the blood and treasure will be for naught.
This whole thing could have been largely handled now if the goalposts had not been altered.

Those goals have largely been accomplished. Plausibly, we should now diminish our troop presence in Afghanistan and turn our attention to other strategic concerns. Opportunities beckon as the Arab and Muslim worlds are in a transition that may mark the beginning of a turn away from jihadism. So also are major risks approaching in the rise of Iran and its maturing nuclear weapons program.
Yes. Years ago. The last five or so have been to establish a "US friendly" government there, which has been mostly a waste of time, money, men and material. At best we have an entity that is little better than what we have relations-wise with Pakistan, and we've recently all seen how that really works.
Iran is a problem, and is probably sooner than later going to be a big problem, and wasting our blood and treasure trying to fix failed states weakens us for those battles to come.
The death of Bin Laden — a marquee objective in the War on Terror — was not accomplished until a few months ago. As for our other objectives and efforts in Afghanistan, it is worth keeping in mind that we are still in medias res and cannot know how things will appear a generation from now.
The US has forces stationed in Germany and Japan, but the US does not occupy either place. It does not in any fashion get involved in how the civilians run those countries, and is not the occupying power.
Its an important difference.

Just learned that PETA sent congratulations to the Taliban for downing the Chinook helicopter that killed 30 US troops.
However, PETA condemned the Taliban for killing one military dog and decided to temporarily suspend donations to the organization.
PETA further announced that it would resume monetary support once the Taliban issued a formalized document that outlines their plans for increasing US human casualties and eliminating the loss of animal life.
Because the supporters of George III aren't still around to screw up foreign policy in the future. Those "conservatives" alluded to are.
I know there was a time when American conservatives would never say this, but seriously man, support our troops-and bring them home now. There is nothing left we can do in Afhganistan, our presence at this point is equivlanet to taking Advil in an attempt to stop lung cancer.
