Talking the Hawk: Regarding Rick Perry's Foreign Policy
American Spectator ^ | Aug 11, 2011 | Reid Smith

Posted on 08/11/2011 8:01:20 PM PDT by Clairity

With Perry's candidacy looming, some of us international relations wonks have begun to take note of his foreign policy positions.

In a 2009 debate against primary opponent Kay Bailey Hutchinson, Perry plainly stated that his faith required him to support Israel. This latter statement was bolstered by his trip to the Holy Land where he accepted the Defender of Jerusalem Award before breaking bread with then-President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

As governor, Perry has suggested the deployment of American troops to Mexico to control drug violence and proceeded with the execution of a Mexican citizen, despite impassioned requests from their government,

Understood in context of the hard-line stance he's taken on matters south of the Rio Grande, his national security team suggests Perry's shaping up as the traditional defense hawk many conservative have been clamoring for in an age of Obama.

On September 7, 2007 [wide ranging speech] Perry gave a speech to California Republicans .............."The terrorist element in the Middle East hates our way of life. And even with the battle raging in Iraq and Afghanistan, we cannot turn a blind eye to the regime in Iran that would obliterate the only democracy in the Middle East if they had a chance. And it’s no big secret that Iranian arms and know-how are finding their way across the border into Iraq, threatening the lives of our allies and, more importantly, our own fighting men and women."..............

2007 -- Perry: ...........“If you show up illegally, without your card or you’re here as a criminal element, I’m for throwing the book at those folks, but the issue of people who want to legally, thoughtfully and appropriately come to America to work and help us build our economy — we should quickly come up with a program and an identification card to do that.” .........[end excerpt] Source

Yep, the spin for Gardasil Rick continues.

In some ways I kind of hope he is the gop candidate. It’ll save me wasting much time with the election.

Nothing you’ve said has done anything to undermine the argument that post 2 should have contained source links. But thanks anyway for the verbosity.

“I can think of worse problems than trying to prevent cancer in women through vaccinations. Spin it how you like. It won’t hold water when the choice is Obama or PERRY/RUBIO in 2012!!! : D “

So you’re good with Birth Control implants in these same little girls.

...I mean after, if you want to help these girls have wild and crazy sex through their teen years, it’s only consistent to make sure they don’t get knocked up.

And that’s fine if that’s how you feel, it just doesn’t meet my standards for a conservative.

“Speak for yourself, bob. The only Texans who know Perry as an “Open Borders type” are the people who don’t pay attention in Texas.”

Since you brought it up, I’ll repeat a posting that I just put up on a different thread. These are responses to someone else...

“no E-Verify you said? About 250,000 employers use the E-Verify program nationally, including 14,188 employers in Texas. Last year, Texas employers made 1.2 million inquiries on prospective workers, according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Houston Chronicle, March 22, 2011. What do you call that?”

A VOLUNTARY system. We’re asking why he won’t MANDATE it (and do give the crap that it’s toooo harrrrddd on employers...it takes 5 MINUTES...the problem is that too many people will CORRECTLY return Illegal status).

“Perry had an anti-Sancturary City bill in the special legislative session this year and it failed final passage after passing the Senate. Pajamas Media blames GOP moneyed interests.”

Agree...so why hasn’t Perry called them back, if he REALLY wants it, just as he did 3 times to get his new Business Tax imposed? Answer, he is PERFECTLY HAPPY with the way it all turned out.

“Perry put Texas Rangers on the border and has not called for Bush/McCain-style “pathway to citizenship” or “earned citizenship” or amnesty. He’s spoken only about a 2 yr renewable guest worker program that requires taxes be paid and permanently excludes criminal aliens.”

He put about 150 of them on the border, that’s all he could do as governor. Nice and symbolic, but that’s about it. The real question one should ask is why he has such a big problem with the border fence. Also, Pelosi hasn’t called for Amnesty since Obama was elected too...even Perry’s limited brain understand how radioactive that issue is.

“You’re correct, the “Texas DREAM Act” was passed and signed 10 years ago. “

Yep, FIRST STATE in the country to do so...and Perry won’t lift a finger to get rid of it. If you’re proud of it, that’s fine, but it still makes him an OPEN BORDERS governor.

Whatever. (see above)

A few things to add.

Even DEMOCRAT governors in California and New Mexico (in the past) COMPLAIN about border enforcement. Mario Cuomo (former New York governor) was famous for saying that while he personally opposed abortion, he would never interfere with a woman’s right to choose. Likewise Perry seems to be saying that while illegal immigration is a HUGE problem in Texas, he would NEVER take steps to make those illegals feel unwelcome here.

I’ve named three SPECIFIC items that other states have done something about, but Perry will not. These items are intended to make life more difficult for illegals once they get here. E-Verify, Sanctuary Cities, and Dream act...all of which we have in Texas.

I also judge a candidate by what he’s accomplished (not just what he whines about), particularly given a 2/3 majority in both houses of the legislature.

“On Gardasil, dose-of-reason-perry-and-gardasil/”

I’ll stick with my point regarding forced birth control to these little girls (if vaccinating to protect them is a good idea, so is forcing them to have an implant)...as it’s much more likely they’ll have to deal with getting pregnant than getting HPV.

I could go into the way Merck bought their way into his his office (i.e., revolving door), or his brand of Crony Capitalism (like Obama and General Electric), but I’ll spare you.

“My point is that for those of us who have been here a long time and have established reputations for knowing about what we speak, we are given deference “

I have to chime in here — posts should stand on their own, in quality, sourcing, whatever, totally apart from the screen name under it or the length of time the poster has posted on FR.

Execting “deference” just because someone is a long term poster is ridiculous.

I may not have been around that long, but I don’t find it offensive if people question my sources, in fact, I always provide link to my sources so people can see for themselves the source and the context.

Also, many people, pro or con any candidate express an opinion without having researched the candidate.

In this instance, I notice people are calling Perry a RINO, when IN FACT, he is a conservative, having implemented a conservative agenda in Texas, that’s why Sarah Palin supported him and called him in conservative, when she campaigned for him for his re-election as Gov.

And while this has been posted before, I am posting the quote and the link.

Governor Sarah Palin’s Endorsement of Governor Rick Perry

“Rick Perry is true to conservative principles even when others think the party needs to go a different direction. I like that about him: he doesn’t care which way the wind blows, he acts on his beliefs.

That’s why I am supporting Governor Rick Perry for re-election. He does what is right regardless of whether it is popular. He walks the walk of a true conservative. And he sticks to his guns - and you know how I feel about guns!”

We call Perry a RINO because he are one. Get over it. Imploring doubters to do their homework on Perry will probably not help you make a case otherwise. The deeper I’ve dug, the worse the smell gets. He’s John McCain with a better haircut.

No, wouldn’t be “fine” with that.
Although I am fine with responsible, non-abortifacient birth control, I am a strong defender of conscience. See http://lifeethics.org

Thanks for a calm and sensible post. Since we are all anonymous on FR it is easy to make untrue claims about background, position, etc. However, one tell-tale sign, for me, is when someone’s argument is weak they often turn to hyperbole. They call supporters of those whom they oppose bots and rinos. We typically see that from liberals since their arguments rarely, if ever, rely on logic.

Many who have historically supported someone else, or they do now, rely on tearing down the opposition rather than singing the praises of their choice. That is another Liberal tactic.

Personally, I support Perry. I like his enthusiasm. I have never seen him support any issue other than a conservative one. Like Palin said, he is consistent. Yet, there are those who see a political motive in every move rather than sincerity. That, too, is a typical Democrat/Liberal attitude.

Concerning Gardasil, some conveniently ignore that the parents of those girls always had the option to opt out. No one was going to be vaccinated against their will.

The other hot button for those who are against Perry is the Trans Texas Corridor. Those proposed routes were very logical and someday will be built. I-35 is crowded all the way from San Antonio to Kansa City and something will have to be done to relieve that sooner or later. Allowing someone else to build and pay for it and collect the tolls is smart.

The claims are that the land owners on each side will have to give up great swaths of their land for the highway. That is true of all highways and it will be true when I-35 has to be widened. Not often mentioned is that the landowners would be offered a fair price for their land and if they preferred they could participate in the tolls collected rather than sell. Most of the time landowners are delighted to have a main highway adjacent to their land. It actually increases the land’s value.

All of that opposition was just dreaming up reasons to oppose something by scaring others.

Ah, another talking point, and one we’ve discussed ad infinitum on this website. You know full well that Perry lucked out by having not one but two primary candidates who turned out to be worse than he. Senator KBH being one and Deb Medina, the 9/11 Truther, followed up by a loser Dem in the general. Palin would obviously endorse the least of the bad, but does that make Perry a “REAL” Conservative ? Don’t make me laugh. Remember, she endorsed McCain out of common courtesy and everybody here didn’t mistake that for her endorsing a Conservative.

Consistency, yes. Of not boldly leading on Conservative issues. You fellas sure dodge his “bold endorsements” of Al Gore and Rudy Giuliani. We certainly know those two are right-wing standard bearers, right ?

Bob, I know you're not as lame as your post. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. But you do no one a service -- not yourself, not conservatism, not anyone -- by trying to create an issue where there is not one, or exacerbating a fact into falsehood. That's what liberals do. Shame on you.

Ordering children (not women, children) through an executive mandate to be vaccinated is the height of nanny-statism.

Yep. I agree. And I was furious with it. But that doesn't mean he was pushing STD vaccinations or any of the other hysterical LIES people (on this site) are perpetuating about him. His intentions were pure. It was about preventing CANCER. And vaccinations are required in Texas already. It was none of his business, that's for sure. I believe ALL vaccination requirements are unconstitutional. But his motives were defensible and hardly makes him a liberal. Just makes him wrong on one issue.

If you can’t see my point as being a logical extension of requiring Gardasil shots, it’s not really my fault.
